1995 WRX Turbo and ECU??
Hi Guys
New to this forum.
On my 5th Impreza now so have a bit of experiance with them.
I just bought a 1995 wrx import, The car has a TD04 turbo on and is running a z4 Ecu (Strange)?? Should it not be a TD05 turbo running on a z4 ecu?
I also heard that you shouldnt run a td04 turbo on a z4 ecu as they are set for a td05?
Anyone know which ecu is the correct one for running a TD04? (Or am i better to get the TD05)
She is running 10psi at the moment standard boost.
Hope that makes sense
Cheers

If a WRX saloon, then it should have a TD05H. And a Z4 is a MY95/96 260PS ECU designed for the TD05H. So in this instance someone has replaced the TD05 for a TD04 and not changed the ECU to suit.
If a WRX wagon, then it should have a TD04L... which means the wrong Z4 ECU has been fitted at some stage.
In either case, I'd expect the fuelling to be a bit on the rich side for the lesser-flowing TD04L. No bad thing re 'safety' - but AFR's will prob be all over the shop ('hopefully' on the rich side).
2 chioices: either refit a TD05H and all will be back to normal. Or fit an MY93-96 WRX wagon ECU to restore the OEM fuelling for the TD04L...
3rd, more expensive, choice: do it properly and get the TD04L remapped on ESL Live, with decatted d/p + system = super-spooling c.280bhp, in perfect saftey.

Cool,
Spot on Thanks for that. It is a saloon so as expected the turbo has been changed.
I am looking to do a bit of tuning to the car, I have a 255 lph f/p and de-cat ex and ind kit.
Am i better to change the turbo back to the 05 for more power (around 300bhp) or can i achieve 300bhp from the 04.
Im looking to fit a FMIC, bigger injectors, chipped ECU/Remap, L/B flywheel.
Cheers

If it is a saloon you are correct about the TD05 being the standard turbo and the Z4 ECU is set up for that.
IMHO fitting a TD05 is by far the best route.
The ECU options to match with the TD04 (eg the 3B as fitted on the wagon) will give less performance than the Z4.

If you're looking to do those mods then yes, fit the 340-350bhp rated TD05H 16g. I'd opt for 550cc injectors rather than 440cc, as you'll know they won't be a possible source of holding back the TD05's potential...
