Was wondering if anyone has rerouted the pipes from the headlamp washers to squirt onto the intercooler??

Good idea or bad idea????

Cool

I went into this a little while ago, seems that it really needs "atomised" spray to be effective.

A couple of kind people posted up links to sites offering the kits and spare parts...no search, Doh!

I still have this in mind, but am playing with boost and zorsts at present.

I will probably have a go at it one day

You really need a timer circuit for the pump too.

Good luck if you do it, MD.

Hi,

I thought about that the other day but a bit more of a primitive set up.. thought about Teeing off from the water jets and getting some fine spray nossels from the scrappy and seting them up so you can give the old washer jet a squirt and it will spray the intercooler....

Would probably help if you could see where you were goignas you squirted it thought....

i thought about using the overboost switch off of a renault 5 gt turbo as a switch for a waterspray system, basically you could plumb in the switch from the renault which can be adjusted to switch at desired boost, using a seperate water bottle and motor this could be set up so that once your boost reaches the set level it activates the spray onto the intercooler......
never materialised though lol
Rob
p.s. quite easily acheieved though!!!!

Wink

Just like to see what scooby dudes get up to

Or another idea would be attach a nice attractive watering can to your bonnet and let the water spinkle onto the intercooler!!!!

Should be up for Sunday what time?

Going to the GTR site now (having a dream)

Hold your horses I want my windscreen fixing at the same time as yours

I'm not very good at polishing though as I never do mine (very weak wrists as a consequence)

I fitted a DIY one to my old WRX, got two atomisers from a pair of water squirters, hooked them via a pump to the water bottle & rigged up to a microswitch under the "go" pedal.

Whenever you hit 1/2 pedal it squirts from either side accross the i/c and a fitted temp sensor inside the i/c showed the drop, only cost less than £20, well worth it.

cheers

Can anyone explain why a fine mist is needed to squirt on the intercooler? Surely the wetter the better in terms of cooling it. Are you getting mixed up with water injection? (which I don't totally understand either?)

Ok this is only a guess but I believe that a fine mist is better because it cools by evaporation (dont know if that's spelt right) so in theory because the intercooler is warm/hot the fine mist hits it, rapidly evaporates taking the heat with it thus cooling the air temp (what do you call this? charge temp? ). If you were to just bung loads of water on it would cool it but not as efficiently. think of all the water you would need, weight, practicallity, where does the water go etc....

I hope that's right..........I'm off for a beer now and to enjoy the sun

Being technical, it's all entropy/lowest energy state based. The cooling is acheived by the action of evaporation: water changing from liquid to gas requires energy, and this energy is extracted from the thing it's evaporating from - in this case, the intercooler. Therefore, the more easily the evaporation can take place, the cooler the object gets - this means that the finer mist (through its lower surface area) works better (less energy is required to get over the initial energy-input 'hump' required to start the evaporation process.)
A little simplified, but hey-ho, don't want to do an essay...

is it ok to squirt the same solution ie. washer fluid & water onto the intercooler???

If so I think it will be very easy to do so long as I can use the same bottle as what it currently comes out of, dont particularly want to add another bottle/pump etc.

Um, no, unless you want a nice thick layer of windscreen-washer all over your intercooler
