ecu plug help pls

92-96 has a 4 plug ecu (yellow loom connectors)
97-98 has a 3 plug ecu (with similar type yellow connectors like the 92-96)
99-00 has a 3 plug ecu (grey connectors)
None are cross compatible with other model years

Aside from the colour diff between the MY97/99 and MY99/00 3-pluggers, do both phases actually have the same shaped sockets (I'm sure some of the actual pinout positions differ though)?

Not quite sure which question you're asking there. Are you asking whether a phase 1.5 ECU has the same shape plugs as a phase 2 ECU? If so, the answer is no. Ph 1.5 are a completely different type to the phase 2, both in terms of the physical interface, and the technology under the hood.
All 97-98MY ECU connectors are physically the same shape as each other - although as you say there are changes to the pinout configuration between the UK and JDM.
All 99-00MY turbo ECU connectors are physically the same shape as each other, but again UK/EU/Aus has a different pinout configuration to JDM. While the circuit board and processor is basically identical on all of them, there are differences in the component population to cater for the different features.
Incidentally, Brett, what's the context of this question? If you are asking whether, for example, you can use a 99MY ECU in a 98MY car, then no, you can't. However, you can use any of the four possible 99-00MY UK ECUs in any 99-00UK car as a straight plug and play swap.
However, you can't take an ECU out of a 98MY UK car and plug it straight into another one, as on these the immobiliser will need re-synchronising.

Pictures of plug shapes, for reference.
1992-1996
1997/98
1999/00
As splitpin mentions above, there are slight wiring changes on same MY ecu's between UK and Jap

lol just wanted to see how the 3-plug of the 97/98 differed from 99/00 one that's all.
I was aware that they'd be totally incompatible between the 2 phases, etc. - it was just a case of me being annoyingly curious.
Rich's post illustrates nicely - wholly different then.

Im going to swap my Autronics ECU back to a standard on my my98 uk turbo.
As stated above I require the immobiliser re-synchronising. Question is,who can re-synchronise the Imobiliser ?
