ecu
I have been told that the ecu in my car can not be mapped (MY98 imported wrx wagon)
Could i get an ecu from a different year and try that or doesnt it work like that?
I didnt really want to go down the route of a power fc

It doesn't work like that, no. If you're really determined to make something work you can do anything, but the time, effort and expense involved in grafting an MY99-00 setup in, for example, would almost certainly cost you more than just buying a dedicated aftermarket control unit for your car.
There is reputedly a field reflash solution for the 97-98 ECUs in the final stages of testing, so if you don't want to go aftermarket, sitting tight for a while longer might be your best bet.

personaly i'd wait for that before having it mapped

As said above ,but might be worth checking out what ecu you have in your car ,and also trying to find out when the car was registered as the 1999 MY was officially released in the October of 1998- so if it was made after this it might well be mappable via ecu tec.
