Any little grey/black bits floating in the coolant of the header/expansion tanks?
Coolant level in expansion tank rising after a good run and still at same level next morning when cold?

Another vote for Darren and Harvey, they won't overcharge either.

You won't go wrong with any of the mentioned places, since you're in Birtley, it make sense for Alyn at ASP to be your first point of call.

Harvey certainly knows his stuff, and his wife makes a lovely cup of tea; but I've not had any work done by Harvey or Darren.

Dude, you are wasting your, and our, time on here. Get a sniff test done by a reputable garage. Then you'll know. NO-ONE can diagnose it over the internet.

Repair is between £800 and £1700 depending on the work needed.

I'll say again:

Alright mate if its not over heating i wouldn't think its the stat as that would make it over heat if stuck closed or slow working, you could try a expantion cap as if it isn't holding pressure in the system then it could be lowering the boiling point of the water?

My head gasket problems started in a similar fashion (06 STi).

A sniffer test showed nothing as the heads were lifting slightly only above 1 bar, which is difficult to reproduce when stationary in a garage.

Just keep an eye out in the next few months for the expansion tank level going up but not back down, the header tank level dropping (the combustion gas is forcing coolant out to the expansion tank). This also gives symptoms of a thermostat failure (cold bottom hose) due to an air lock.
Slight overheating on a good run.
Black bits in the coolant (HG sealant coming away).

For me, there was no sudden HG failure, it all happened slowly over about 10k miles until I could stand it no longer and did a rebuild.

Hopefully it is as simple as the thermostat, but STi 06 HG failures have been noted.
