Default throttle potentiometer

hi everyone i recently had my car looked at because its not been running properly and iv been told its needs a new throttle potentiometer. To be honest i have no idea what this does and the problem is the garage says that they are 250 quid and will take 12 weeks to ship from japan. So what i would like to know is can i get one cheaper? and can i get one from this country? my car is a 1998 import wrx. thanx guys.

It tells the ECU how much throttle you're using, which it needs to know for a stack of good reasons.

Was it a Subaru main dealer who told you that, or some sort of specialist? The usual lead time on special orders from Japan via Subaru UK is usually something less than six weeks. 12 is bonkers.

Yep. You can get one here for £89 plus postage. Order it tomorrow you'll probably have it Friday. If you search on here for a thread on how to fit and calibrate the new one, you can fit it yourself and deprive the garage who gave you a silly answer of the labour they otherwise might have earned fitting it.

Note that the pot in the link I've given you above is for 1997 and 1998 model year cars. If your "1998 wrx" is actually an early 1999 model year car, you need this one instead.
