head gasket replacement

Default head gasket replacement

The head gasket on on side has gone the garage where i bought the car from says under warranty they will repair the head gasket that has failed but not the other one all though they reccommended having both done at an extra cost of £300 which i will have to pay
What are your thoughts on that do both head gaskets need replacing if only one has failed

id get both done and pay but i would make sure they use steal gasketts and also ask them how they are going to work out which side has gone and also i woudl aks if they are going to skim the head as if they are they would n eed to do both th eheads may not need skimming thou

Since they will have the engine out (in effect for free), you may wish to consider other items such as clutch or cambelts etc. if they are near due, as there will be no labour cost incurred.

Thanks thats what i thought to its just had the belts done 1k ago its done 55k do think a clutch will be in order as well

Get both done as the other will start leaking.
Also make sure the heads are skimmed.

its a spec D like yours mate would you recommend a clutch also its done 55k

if i was you id make sure the garage that are doing this now what there talking about before you let them do anything as it sounds to me like they dont due to the fact they were only going to one side

You can’t repair just the one head, it’s also a little dumb on their part to even suggest this.

No what it is i bought the car second hand from a performance dealer i took it back to them and described the fault i thought i had, and i said i knew a garage that specialised in subaru,s so we both agreed it go to them to be looked at anyway the dealer i bought the car from agreed to pay for the head gasket that was going all labour and parts and the garage suggested get both sides done at the same time which i would have to pay the extra for which is £300 and £300 extra for a new clutch in at the same time

OK - I have a spec D 06 and have just had the head gaskets done, heads skimmed etc etc.
I had the clutch changed and the belts.
My car has 95,000 on it, so the belts were due and so was the clutch (most likely).
Shame about your belts being done 1,000 ago.
I guess the clutch can be inspected for wear on yours when the engine is out.
I would echo some of the concerns bought up by other posters and would want both gaskets done along with the obligatory head skimming FOC. Perhaps you can ask them how they know which head gasket is at fault and if it is recommended practice not to skim the heads when changing them. If nothing else, at least it will appear to them that you know what you are on about.

The OEM clutch is perfectly good for IRO 400 lbft unless you like drag starts.
It is also cheaper than an Exedy kit, apart from the release bearing.
Part no.s are:

Plate (30100AA920) is £104
Cover (30210AA670) is £115
Release bearing - Exedy one off Ebay £30
Spigot bearing £10 off Ebay

Prices have gone up some 10% since the above was quoted.

The flywheel may need skimming, depending on condition.

May be it's something about spec d's and there head gaskets! Mine needs doing as well with only 36k on the clock! Ill have the cambelt changed whilst it's in bits, but is it worth having the pistons changed for better ones! Due to what I've been advised on the 'common 2.5 litre engine failure'

Cant see its just the Speec D's as they are the same engine as all the other 06-07 sti's (UK)
