Sorry to hear mate, just before Christmas, what a right royal pita! I know nothing about rebuild costs, but as one bloke to another, would you want to trust an eBay seller?

hi i would avoid anyone offering to supply and fit a new engine from ebay even more so so if they are SMR or ideal engines, best bet to give David at api a bell he will set you straight.

BUT - you also cannot afford to do it twice.

We do what we call an " economic repair " which is a no frills job, but works well and still has a limited guarantee. Even a limited APi guarantee is worth more than most others.

If it is a big end failure; Bring me the engine out of the car £1000.00 + VAT

Bring the car £1500.00 + VAT

How's that fit ?

David

i have been in your situation and chose a used engine from a wrx to fit my wrx, the car is fine but i wish i could go back and fit a sti engine, i would do that if i were you, you can get more power safley and the sti engines are really strong, not too expensive, but i dont know if you want to get a used engine.

Mate, find the money or use Shanks' Pony for a while until you do, but get the job done right, first time.

Take david up on that £1000 offer.

Also David , My Dads been calling as i cant use the phone at work , Not sure if it was yourself he spoke to but im told there was a minimum charge of £1700-£2000 but i can have an engine fitted for £200 with all my old parts swapped across. so belive it would work out cheaper if i can source a good engine.

Read my thread 'help, killed the scoob' then call David at API and give him £1000 with a very, very big sigh of relief !

As he says, the so called 'rebuilt' ebay engines are a big no no as I found out to my cost.

If you look at the cost of parts, there is no way on earth that they are replacing the parts that they claim to be.

Generally they are a running engine out of a breaker with a quick jet wash and coat of paint.

If you fit it and get 30 days, result ! they have your money and the 'guarantee' is up.

If it fails, they p**s you about and ask you to return the car for them to replace the engine under guarantee but charge you for the labour.

They then mysteriously find other things to charge for and guess what ?

Thats right, they now have your car, with no engine !

The phrase 'got you over a barrel' sound familiar ?

that sounds like a very fair price for the work involved.

I'm sorry but it comes across like the o.p. is prepared to take the gamble (or talk himself into taking the gamble) for the sake of a couple hundred quid.

Right seriously, stop! There is a reason a lot of the other companies are offering you the "same" service for less - becuase they are using dodgy parts and poor workmanship.

So lets see, you pay for one of these famous eBay specials. You're one of the 9/10 which blow up in a couple months and you''re left with an empty wallet and pissy mood.

ORRRR, you make the effort, sacrifice a couple of things and take the car to somewhere like API. 99.99999% of David O'Briens customers on here will recommend nobody else - there is a reason for this and it ain't because Mr O'Brien (no relation, my name is Andy) sends cheques in the post - it is becuase for the price and workmanship involved you cannot beat them.

Take a step back, realise how dangerously close to wasting your money you are wasting it on eBay crap, give yourself a slap across the face with a trout or something and take up David on his kind offer FFS

Engine out, drop off at API, let Daivid and his team work the fairy dust, pick up, fit back into car, come onto Scoobynet and thank everyone for making you see sense.

Job done.

As I told you on another forum send it to David at API. A proper job, price guaranteed and no worries. Proper job done once is far better than a half ar5ed job done twice when you're spending this amount of money.

Hmmmm , ebay engines out the question now its come out its the same company the voices had so much bother with , Best options now are :

API rebuild @£1,175.00 if its nothing more than big end damage plus cost of taking engine down and then price of getting engine removed and then back in - say £50 each way then £150 to swap in and out =

aprox - £1425 providing theres no more damage in there ,

or second hand 04 plate 35K miler from a breaker with 12 months warrrenty - http://www.iengines.co.uk at around £1k deliverd and will have a few spares to sell and recoop some money , Plus £200 fitting with all my uprated parts swapped across =

£1200 all in - whatever i get for spares.

I just dont think i can take the gamble of there being something else damaged in there once API had it opened up otherwise i would go down that route

You have 2 options, do it right the first time or pay twice for the same job, the 2nd is the most expensive, probably setting you back 50+% of the original cost of getting the engine rebuilt in the first place.

There is one more option open to you, have a word with TEG motorsport in Carnforth, they have done rebuilds in the past, either get them to rebuild it or API, any other way can cost you far more than a replacement engine.

It's looking like it's going to cost you £1200 or there about no matter what avenue you go down. Yep selling the spares might net you a few quid, but the market for anything seems terrible right now, not to mention the hassle.

What about trying to agree an inspection cost with David at API? that way if it's repairable for the quote you'll get it done. If not you can make an informed decision. If it was my money I'd still be trying my best to let API do the work. I'm new to the community but one name has consistently appeared since I joined and it's David at API.
