Where is the best position for a sportcat for performance and be able to pass mot, I noticed the milltek has it in the centre pipe whereas most fit it in the downpipe, car is a my05 jdm sti. I currently have standard downpipe and full cat back 2.5 system, was thinking of a universal 200 cel cat and welding in the centre then getting a haywood and scott decat downpipe. This would be similar to milltek set up, and is it likely to be mot friendly, dont want to buy a milltek as I love my genome rear silencer and wouldn't change it. Anyone had any experience of these universal cats, presume the metallic substrate ones are best.Something like this one

My understanding is that it depends on the age of your car as emissions change. I dont know about 05 - I have a 97.

But Cats work better the hotter they are, so closer to the engine. So sport cats for older cars like mine can be further away from engine, ie after turbo which means they dont interfere with the exhaust before the turbo for better performance.

I understand later cars have cats in the up pipe & after the turbo as emissions are stricter.

I'd be surprised if you cant get sports cat down pipe to fit your cat back system, save you cutting & welding etc...
