MD321T 2.0lt on my 05 STI Blob - Very Happy
Hi all,
Just wanted to relay my thanks to S4U, RaceDynamix and Lateral Performance, for the work they did on my car.
Having gone from an STI PPP with the stock VF35 and some light tuning, which was running very nicely, to an MD321T - not only does the car develop more power and torque but it's more responsive at the low end as well and surprisingly the the T 'feels' like it responds better than my old VF35 which I didn't expect.
On initial setup I had:
GGR induction in an insulated box with a custom cold air feed
Ported headers, IC Y-pipe, throttle body.
Venturi up-pipe
Lightweight pulleys with under-drive pulley.
Mapped more times than I can count.
Was running very nicely, much more responsive than it was as an STI PPP and pulled much harder at the top end also.
After the last round of tweaking:
VF35 replaced by MD321T
STI pink 552s replaced by WRX's re-flowed to 830cc
GT Spec II headers with a venturi up-pipe from lateral performance (wrapped).
Fuel Labs FPR.
Mapped again.
The car now develops 375hp and 345lb torque, doubtless I could go higher if I went FMIC and removed the downpipe cat.
The part that I wanted to highlight is that when driving off boost the car is even better than for the previous improvements and they themselves had made the car much more drivable low-down. Moreover it feels like the car pulls harder earlier and is less laggy than before. This surprised me it's counter intuitive to what I expected going from the '35 to the 'T.
Happy to say, from my own experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend the above tweaks and the 321T to improve both the off-boost and on-boost driving experience...

Nice, if a T only got you 375bhp i think my dreams of getting 370bhp from my H are fading real quick.

Not surprised at the faster response than with the VF35, as the VF35 likes to surge too easily!
Bit lacking in power though I would say, my VF35 mapped by Duncan with meth is over 370bhp. But I'm sure there's an explanation for it.
But if it feels better and drives better, and is faster than previously, then it's a win win all around really

I have to agree - i found the feel and responce of the Lateral Turbo to be fantastic through out the rev range. Something you can't tell from a dyno plot. Its a great driving experience.

good to here your happy with the result, but 375bhp with the 321t seems a pretty low figure.back in the days when i had my first turbo change on my 03 sti to the md321h with similar supporting mods to you,also on top mount mine made 383bhp at 1.5bar.

Car is still running the standard exhaust with the PPP down-pipe cat and minus the center cat.
Boost is at 1.5 then tailing down to 1.4 as the car started to det for no obvious reason, unless the AFRs were too high but Duncan would pick up on that. Anyway, he therefore had to pull a tonne of timing (~5 deg) which would cause a massive hit on the power. If I'd forked out the £1500 for a Syvecs we might've isolated the issue there and then...
Based on what other people have posted for 321Ts on 2.0lt with TMICs I expected this to be around 410/360 ish but c'est la vie. At what I've got with the driving experience I'm very happy!

Better safe than sorry, I have no idea what det actually is, but I know it needs to be avoided.
Is there no way to work out what was causing it without spending thousands?
Totally off topic, but the 293.4bhp is the power at the wheels isn't it? I am just wondering why my conversion from wheel to engine BHP is +15.5% and yours is +27.5% can I have some free ponies

Loads more to come on this with a freeer flowing exhaust and fmic ... the std tmic was being very unhelpful to power production whilst mapping it, so had to trim it back to keep it safe through all gears.
Once those two bits are sorted (in the spring perhaps) ... Then we can turn it up properly

i thought sti top mounts were good for around 400? does it vary due to condition of tmic? im aware the fmic will gain more power.

Also depends on other mechanical factors (in this case, the original downpipe cat) and also how close to the edge you want it mapped.

Thanks for chipping in........I have PM'd Mark Aigin at Lateral Performance about a MD321 T/H. I have lost track of what you can do on supplying the hardware side of things....is this OK ??
