Default Ecu replacement query

Hi all, here goes...I was informed mths ago my ecu was faulty and ive just received a replacement ecu (via snet member), upon replacing it the car is just turning over and not starting.
The replacement ecu was from a running car and has Ecutek and was mapped for the car it came from.
Is there some simple answer to this like an immobiliser prob or the map setting on the ecu.
I know the ecu will have to be re-mapped for my car.

JDM Hawkeye.
Any info would be gratefully appreciated, its been a long time and itching to get back behind the wheel

Think you have to match your keys to the ecu otherwise the immobiliser wont disarm.

just rang amc in chelmsford(main dealers) and they quoted me £85 for 5th jan, wilsons in romford(main dealers) £94 for jan 4th,

seems steep

Is it only a main dealer that can do the key coding?

I think you will need the car setting up from scatch and that includes starting the engine by your mapper, even though the ecu's are identical. If the imobiliser was involved it would'nt allow the engine to turn.

The keys need to be coded to the ECU or nothing will happen.... Simple as!

I changed mine when I sold my EcuTek ECU and had to ge tthe car to a garage to have them done, mine only cost £40 at Welches.

If you plan to have the car remapped, leave the faulty ECU in for now, book the mapping and the EcuTek mapper will be able to sort this problem out for you as part of the mapping process and should cost you no extra

the car has an aftermarket alarm/immobiliser if that makes any difference?

wouldn't have thought so, the fact that it's letting the engine turn over would indicate neither imobiliser or keys.

Nah..... Mine had an aftermarket Imob and alarm and when the ECU was changed it would turn but not fire.

What ever way you look at it, you are going to have to have the keys recoded for the new ECU, no avoiding this

My experience may be different because I went from standard ecu to simtek which had already been mapped on same year car albeit different spec. It took the mapper a good 20 minutes to get the car to fire up on installation of the new ecu. Same keys not recoded.

Im hoping to get JGM to map it providing he is not booked up for the next few months, maybe he could drop an opinion

as Stealth says best option to put the original ecu back and let JGM sort out at the mapping. I wouldn't have thought running your car on an ecu mapped for another albeit similar car a safe action.

There is a chip inside the key that needs matched to your new ECU or it wont start, it doesnt matter if you have an aftermarket alarm as it is a different system.
Main dealer or an EcuTek tuner can code this.

AFAIK the SimTEk doesnt look for chip in the key, as long as you have a correctly coded(cut) key it will work.

As trevs said, putting an ECU in mapped for a different car is engine suicide.... or a case of the most boring driving in the world EVER! the car would be fine for off boost low rev driving but that is it and I wouldn't want to do that for long as the temptaion to nail it is far to great LOL

No coded keys on a simtek. Im running a nissan key with mine as its much smaller with none of them buttons that dont work lo las mine has a seperate fob for alarm etc. i just had the blank cut and no chip installed. Ofcourse i still have the o/e keys incase i ever want to te-install the o/e ecu Yes the keys need coding. the key coding shuts the fuel pump down so will allow cranking etc etc

thanks for the input
I am aware it would need re-mapping asap and defo would not have driven it about , I just purely wanted to see if it cures the prob I had before which nobody could pinpoint, the 'faulty ecu' was the only real answer I got.
Its been way too long, im sick of walking past it everyday for about the last 6mths and not being able to drive it

I know how you feel mate, when I was doing mine I couldn't drive it for bloody ages through one reason or another, either wheels were on arches waiting for rolling, waiting for mapping sessions everytime I changed something, car generally in bits as I fitted bigger turbo, FMIC etc etc, the list goes on but it will be worth it buddy and you will love her once she is at full power and trouble free

shall I tell you what's bugged me.....
Ive taken the car to 3 reputable specialists 1 didnt impress me with his attitude the 2nd palmed me off with a load of cr*p and the 3rd told me it was/narrowed it down to the ECU but still wasn't 100%.
Its cost me x amount of money and time and its still costing me money and still not certain it's gonna be ok.
Ive lost the love and NEVER thought id say that
