Default head gasket change on v8 sti should i do shells aswell

hi i have done many head gasket changes on classic sti but i was always told that you should change the crank bearings at the same time.
but is this still the case with the newer sti v7 onwards where the blocks are much stronger

Yes every time, its not much more work to strip it right out, plus if you don't it will be at the back of your mind that you should off, especially when it does go **** up.

Yes, do it, plus make sure you get the right gaskets, especially if the heads/blocks get skimmed.

Most of the respected specialists recommend doing the bottom end if doing the HG/s, esp. if it's a Classic and/or if the motor's done circa 60k+ miles...

Which MY Classic have you got? MY93-98 (v.1-4), or MY99/00 (v.5/6)?

Ah, I'm with yer.

The v.1-4 ones are 1.6mm, the v.5/6 are 0.6mm.

But not sure on the MY01 New Age Bugeye's. Try checking on RCM's site - I think they might be listed...

Sorry i didnt mean the head gaskets i know what ones i need, What i meant was with most cars you can buy gasket kits ie crank seals, cam seals, water seals, but you find with subaru you have to buy one at a time that pushes the price up And to be honest i use api quick call to david and i have all the gasket i need for full rebuild also go with uprated oil pump with acl shells,
but it just bugs me that there is no complete rebuild kits oem spec or better out there

Subaru do sell a complete gasket kit, but it contains absolutely every gasket, seal circlip, sealing washer etc used in building an engine from scratch and contains about 180 items.

You would find that if you bought one, you would end up with a lot of items unused and that would be a waste of money, a kit would cost you around £450 from a dealer.

No m8, Cambelt depending on when it was changed last(4 years or 50K)

The above thread is only if its broken, If your car runs fine leave it alone

Well then they are not looking in the right place... Tell them to look at illustration fig no: 002 in their parts system, it will not only give them a part number but will also list all parts and part numbers of the parts contained in the kit.

I did this before posting earlyier and counted the parts contained in the kit, which was 180.

Yes, ONLY if HG fails (as you'd be pulling motor out in this case).

Apparently, in a highish mileage car, it's common for non-refreshed bottom ends to fail soon after a HG change.
