Unhappy secondary air system needs replacing

Hi folks I'm new to the site and was hoping for some advice.

I have a 07 wrx sti with 80k on the clock. Last night the EML warning light came on so i popped it into the dealers today and have been told that the car needs the secondary air system replacing – consisting of 2x valves, 2x gaskets and pump = £1517.50 inc.

I've been told water has got into it and when i asked how they said it could be because the valve had been stuck open. How might this of happened?

Am I being overcharged?

Sounds odd that the ENTIRE system has failed. Normally its just one or other of the valves, but these are something like £300 each.
Without taking the system apart, they have quoted the max. cost solution - times must be hard for them.

You could always remove the system, put blanking plates over the holes in the head and get the CEL codes mapped out.

Hi Butty and thank you for replying.

Should I challenge them over it?

Hi ya Silverstone

The garage told me i shouldn't drive the car so it is still sitting at the dealers waiting for me to agree to the work.

Do you think it is drivable?

The light came on last night when i drove home which was only about 9 miles. I drove to the dealers today and it came on again after a couple of miles.

The dealer didn't mention that he'd checked the fuses. I am trying not to sound too niaive but maybe i am being taken for a ride by the dealer.

most of them are ok , its a known fault that the air system has faults , we had on in last week that had to have all three parts , but also there was another that just needed a fuse ..
Its a shame your the other end of the country , the pumps are 700 quid or so and valves 150 each i think ..

the purpose of the air pump is to send more air into the exhaust during a cold startup, and on idle sometimes. This is purely to reduce emissions

Thank you Rich

I think I'll chat to the dealer in the morning and might just take the car off them and find somewhere else.
