Default VF34 Turbo whine?!!!!?

Okay lads, for the past 3 weeks when I can get the time, I've been fitting a few bits. FMIC, VF34 turbo, 550 injectors ect...

I was approaching completion so I though I would fire it up & check for leaks ect..

Now I'm getting what can be described as a jet engine noise coming from the turbo & I fear the bearings might be shot.

Have a listen to this & tell me what you think?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx6S_eEpt5I

Surely that's not normal?

Could it be a leak? Because I didn't renew the turbo up pipe gasket.

Cheers boys

I must admit it does sound pretty cool, I just didn't expect any difference in noise compared to my VF24.

Can I have a bit more input from you fellow VF34 owners please?

I'm not sure whether or not I have a boost leak.

I took the car for a test drive today & when applying light throttle/acceleration, I could hear quite a loud turbo whistling noise as the boost comes in, the whistling goes away when the boost really starts coming in, but that might be because the induction noise drowns it out. Is this just another characteristic of the VF34 turbo? I haven't had it remapped yet so I didn't want to drive it too hard but I did see almost 1.5 bar on the boost gauge before I quickly backed off the throttle.

Thanks

Hi there that's normal again, mine have similar characteristic sound if you applied throttle..
I have fitted with Samco Silicone hose and HKS Suction Kit and sound has been so loud and so nice..
I run on mine just 1.5bar,but at cold morning 1.7 bar has been achievable..
Don't worry about this noise, this noise is normal..

i really wouldn't worry about it roller bearing turbo's do whine, it is a bit nosier than normal but it's only the bearing showing a bit of wear, the vf28 i had on my type r sounded like a cat was been strangled when i turned the engine off but it still pulled like a train and it must have been twice as loud as yours!

+1 for the above, my vf28 does the same and is really noticeable when switching the engine off sounds like some marbles rolling around in the engine.

No being funny mate, but you got oil in it?

Maybe just the sound recording on yer phone, but the engine sounds a bit chappy

Dosnae sound like any boost leak i've heard before, but the whistling ye mentioned does....leak or hole in your air intake...the right Restrictor pill in your boost solenoid hose for the VF34?

Have you got a recirc valve or bov? - when the bearings first started to go with my first VF34, I had spurts of oil coming out of the bonnet scoop when it was dumping...

Hmmmm well I've a vf36 and that doesn't whine, I've seen vf34's that don't whine either, considering it's running on a film of oil it should be pretty quiet (also goes for the vf22 hybrid I have on my type R).
If anything it could be wear on the impeller, a little movement would cause resonance at certain rpm's.

Agree withTonyBurns regarding the whine, mind though that if there is movement in the shaft and the impellor is contacting the housing, any metallic bits are goin into the engine and end up f@cking crankshafts and bearings.......

Yes mate there's oil in it, it's the phone making it sound like a diesel & my engine has piston slap when cold. I haven't changed any of the pipes or restrictor pills, I plumbed it all back in how it was when I took off the VF24. I used the Banjo bolt from the VF24 as well. Also primed the turbo by removing the crank sensor & turning the engine over for about a minute.

I thought the extra noise might be because of the FMIC as I've never had one before so don't know how they effect/create different sounds. I do have a Blitz BOV on at the minute so I'll check that for oil but the intercooler pipes already had some oil residue in because I bought the FMIC second hand.

Thanks for your help, appreciate it.

There certainly wasn't any play in the shaft when I fitted it but I will try & see if there is any now.

The whistling is quite loud at light throttle/acceleration but not so much as you really start opening the taps. Where could this leak be do you think? It's hard to pin point it whilst driving & that's only when you can hear it.

Lol, you guys do make me laugh it's nothing to worry about.

VF34 turbos's WHINE simples, mine used to sound great, and i loved it as it gives the car that jet engine sound, and when you turn them off it whines again, very cool with a turbo timer as you walk away.
