Turbo shaft play.

Turbo shaft play.
Hi guys, never had a turbo in my hands so am not sure how much/little play is ok. MD321 h has got a very little play side to side, nothing top to bottom. How much side movement can a turbo have?

MD range use Garrett Ball Bearing cores which have still movement side to side.

Last time we are bring him the MD turbo and this turbo have like yours shaft play and Neil told us,All turbo's will have some degree of play and if its stored without oil for longer time and as long as the impeller clears the compressor housing by a few thou" when play is taken up, its a good start.
As long as the shaft wheel spins freely and the wheels don't contact their respective housings, the turbo will function properly

A very little bit of side to side movement is ok, in and out is a no no. there have been reports of turbos with in and out play to still pull as they should and produce figures but i suppose its a matter of time before something happens to them. I wouldn't buy a turbo with in and out play, mostly for peace of mind.

If it is a sleeve bearing turbo( ie td 04/05 etc there will be a bit of side to side movement as the bearing uses the film of oil to steady/pressurise it. A roller bearing turbo should have even less side to side movement but a slight amount of up/ down movement due to the ballbearings inside, which only requires a fine film of oil to lubricate them. As said above if you leave them stored then you can mistakenly think they have excessive play at 1st, but once they are primed and oil going round the bearing the shaft is stabilized they are good to go
