Default lambda sensor

anybody know how to tell when the lambda senor is knackered like what are the typical symptoms...? would it explain the hesitation i get on boost between 2500 - 3500? maybe due to giving bad fuel/air readings to the ecu, i do get a lot of popping from the exhaust which would indicate unburnt fuel...

Hesitation low down, excessive fuel consumption and popping from the exhaust would all be typical symtomps of a failed lambda sensor.

ok so is it definitely the lambda sensor that needs replacing and is causing the problem then...? its a 97 turbo 2000 uk (facelift) so from the link in your post its £60 all in for the correct lambda sensor for my impreza, is it a straight like for like swap?

Correct, direct swap, just need to re-use your old plug connect three wires and off you go.

Same day dispatch or you can come and collect from Letchworth.

Cut off old plug, connect wires and plug it back in.

im not sure what you mean by cut off the old plug, do you mean the sensor part that connects to the exhaust or the cable part? i want a direcct like for like swap that i dont have to cut anything off of just take off old and put in new one, dont you do the original correct lambda sensor for my car?

In the downpipe, just after the turbo.

To the OP, what you are describing could well be the Lambda, however it could also be the MAF and a whole host of other things. Why not get it properly diagnosed before the additional cost of replacing parts that you think may be faulty?

yeah i was thinking of getting a diagnosis done by subaru they said £47, do you think theyll be able to work out whats wrong by the diagnosis weather its the maf, lambda sensor or faulty boost solenoid or relay, it does tick over a bit up and down like its got a misfire and must be over fuelling or running rich as pops the exhaust a lot...?

I phone suburb today coz i need to get one but there saying its got 2 can see the one on downpipe . But where is the other one . Have been under the car but can't see it . Any ideas . There saying there one there

i didnt know there was 2 lambda sensors maybe if yours is a my99 it might have different set up to mine as mine is a my97 i think mine just has 1 just before the 1st cat on the downpipe.

yes i am guna take it for a diagnosis but thought i could save the money if i could find out it was definitely the lambda sensor or do you mean the engine fault codes because thats the 1st thing i did im not showing any faults...

ok cheers it seems quite involved to check the sensor is working but i know without a diagnostic thats the only way to know for sure the sensor is working right. i did notice before a bit of exhaust escaping around where the lambda sensor is attached i take it thats not normal is it supposed to be a tight or sealed so no exhaust seeps through? from what i can tell by the symptoms from what ive read it could be the lambda sensor thats causing the problem, up and down tickover, poping exhaust, slightly reduced mileage and of course the stutter/hesitation low down revs as boost comes in.

If its leaking around the sensor that will give false readings and cause running problems.

ok so could just be that then, i tried to move it earlier to see if it was loose or had any movement but seemed solid but if theres a small gap or leek of exhaust gases it still might not move so if i seal around it with exhaust paste or something maybe that will fix it, or is that a bad idea? i suppose i could see if the nut will tighten up any more first...

If it were my car id seal it up and see what happens,if you have a aftermarket dump valve that can cause problems as well.Then plugs then garage in that order.

yeah i think ill try sealing it up 1st and see what happens, so if it is failing or faulty its very noticable in engine running and performance? i do have a blitz dump valve but hasnt caused any problems as been on the car 2 years now.
