the problem is that the car drives ok but when u get to 3.5-4k revs it holds back and dose not go over this its in all gears.

i dont have a clue where to start but iam goin to be cleaning the air filter as its mingy and its a mushroom style open air filter.

Its in limp mode and i would say the maf is knackered due to the mushroom style filter killing it.
Do a search on google on how to read the fault codes on a classic shaped impreza, or take it to a dealer, either way I wouldnt try forcing the car to perform, it may just cost you more than the car did (then come back and we will tell you what to dump and what to put back on )

I would check the codes first, the maf is fc23, its common with dodgy mushroom filters, it may be something else but mafs are fairly cheap at 120 quid, and bin the mushroom filter unless you have an aftermarket ecu, it wont be doing you any favours.

the mushroom filter will be goin and its completely standard apart from the filter

Dont know about a sticking actuator ,but if youve connected the black plugs on your car and its flashing the check engine light showing codes 22,23 then try resetting your ecu first and trying again and see if you still get the fault codes flashing up.

i have a brand new genuine subaru MAF sensor for a 99-00 impreza for sale mate.

am looking for £80 for it which is a lot cheaper than getting one new from a dealer or import car parts (£102.55 plus postage!)

PM me if you're interested ;-)

No sweat... pm back ;-)

i would definately not reccomend ever fitting anything other than a brand new genuine air flow sensor...

seen to many horror stories of people buying second hand ones, only for them too last a little while until.....

Don't know about any horror story's on 2nd hand mafs , as I bought one off ebay for £10.50 off a guy breaking a car, to act as a spare. I replaced my near new maf with the one I got off ebay & reset the ecu to make sure it worked. It worked fine and has been on the car for 14 months & 2 remaps, as well as the lambda sensor that cost me £30, which has been in the car for the last 2 yrs.
So it depends who/where you buy parts from IMHO .
