Default Ticking noise.

I hope that you guys here on scoobynet can help me out. I got some ticking noise in my STI Type R V5. . It sounds like a ticking noise from the side of the engine. It get's louder when the engine is hot. . The engine has done 95000km and is just recently direct imported from japan. No tuning done on it yet. . . Sorry for the swedish text in the video. . . First text: Idle, engine just started. It has stood overnight. . second text: about 1100rpm, cold engine . third text: about 1700-1800rpm, cold engine. . Forth text: about 1100rpm, working temp on the engine. . fifth text: about 1800rpm, working temp on the engine. . http://vimeo.com/18872749 password: ticking

Nosey lifter/sticking valve? may need re-shimming.

Have you got the right grade of oil in it and are you using 99 ron fuel if it is an import or has it been mapped for uk fuel?

Yeah i think i might need re-shimming, but i'm not sure. Some here in sweden has said it sounds normal. That boxer engines sounds like that. I got mobil 1 5-50 now. But it was just in it for like 150km. I'm gona replace it with Castrol Edge Sport 10-60 when i take it out in april. I'm using V-power 99 ron fuel and haven't been driving hard with it because it hasn't got a remap for swedish fuel yet.

look under piston slap it states that a ticking / tappet noise is common on all impreza engines

Piston slap usually gets quieter as the engine heats up...was a big problem for '97/98 models mainly and a lot fixed under warranty.

the password is in the first post after the link to the video. Password: ticking

.....I looked at the link and read the section with piston slap....and mine is a MY99.

........It seems a small percentage of the MY98 cars have had problems with Piston Slap after a period of 10,000 to 20,000 miles has been covered. This manifests itself as a knocking noise which is much more pronounced when the engine is cold. This should not be confused with a ticking/tappet type noise which is common on all Impreza engines

Had the same on a Mitsi when i changed the oil for thinner oil. A lot of people say do not use Mobil 1 in scoobs - have a look at the link i posted for a good, safe alternative oil

Good luck

Okey. Luckily i have only driven a few km with that oil. But i know one guy here i sweden with a Type r, he uses the Mobil 1 5w-50 oil without any problems. He is putting out 370bhp.

i would say to use would be 5w-40 or 10w-40 millers of possible and sounds like a sticking lifter, or what about idle tensioner bearing? would be more from the front though and lifter would sound more from the side
as paul said

i know this sounds nuts but does your car have ht leads or individual coil packs if it has ht leads check them i had a similar noise on my p1 and i was terrified brought it in the garage expecting to start a rebuild and found the ht lead on the left bank loose and arking in the tunnel had no misfire and was running well but it was wat louder than you would expect and could be heard in the car at idle

My car has ht leads. And they have only done like 38000km. I recently changed them because i found them at work. I also changed the ignition coil. And it sounds the same as before i changed them.

Could also be a blown exhaust manifold gasket.

+1 for blown exhaust gasket, my car sounded exactly the same, took it down to Drews and half the gasket was missing, replaced it, and its back to normal now

Noise gets louder when the car warms up and tick noise increases when revs increase, sounds like exactly the same problem to me

hmm...okey maybe it its the gasket's. It isn't so hard to replace them so maybe i'll give it a shot.

But it sounds most around the injectors and valvecovers.
