Default Short block what one

Hi
Have just broke a main bearing in my 1998 2.0 turbo V3-V4 so now looking for a short block can i use any block sti ,wrx any year or is my choice limted ?would still like to use my heads looking for a straight swap.

All short blocks are the same, think its heads etc that are different

Any 2.0 short block will be fine, later blocks have thrust bearing at the end instead of the middle and are better (assuming they are both open deck)

Thanks for the info
but does this mean that i can't use a later model block so as STI8,9 semi closed deck and what years had middle thrust bearings and end thrust bearings can these not be combined ?
