It is a good upgrade over your td04 and will provide you with substantially more bhp than your oe unit.It will need a remap once fitted ,and a few supporting mods should see you past 300+ bhp.It has decent bottom end grunt as well. I opted for the vf28 on my 00 uk ,due to better midrange torque ,but each to there own .A little bit about the vf24:

IHI VF24
(425cfm at 18psi, 250-325whp, Bolt-On)
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the JDM V4 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. This turbo shares its compressor housing with the VF23, however, this housing is mated with a smaller (P18) exhaust side. The smaller characteristics of this turbo allow it to provide ample bottom end power and quick spool. This turbo is very popular for Imprezas with automatic transmissions and Group-N rally cars.
Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 2800-3300rpms. 2002-2005 WRX owners will need fuel upgrades for this turbocharger and proper engine management is highly recommended for all vehicles.

There's the VF22, 23 and 24. These were fitted to MY97/98 cars - depending on spec. (The VF22 was a factory option for the 22B - if the customer didn't want the std. fit smaller 23).

The 24 is the smallest, the VF22 biggest. Not quite sure the max power potential of all three though...

They're getting rare and 'old' now. But in the region of £200 second hand I would've thought.

But don't forget the seemingly more prevalent VF29 or 28 as fitted to MY99/00 WRX and STi respectively. These can do 320-330 odd and are quick spooling (prob slight earlier than the VF24-22 range???). I can vouch for the VF28 personally, as I had one (OEM fitment) on my STi 5 - great turbo for the road.

Slightly O/T... I sold on my 40k miles VF28 to a Starlet Turbo owner for around £200 (check ebay for price ballpark - if any are on there!). He went on to get mapped to make 302bhp on the tiny 1.3 motor (or he may have had the later 1.5 version). But still......!!!

As said above there are a few about you just need to look around and try and get a good one.My vf28 cost me £150.00 collected and had covered 45 k and is still going strong so far. A Vf 23 will spool up slightly later(500/600 rpm)than your td04 & are good for 320 bhp ,but much stronger midrange. Heres one you might want to have a look at:

I had the 28 roller bearing turbo on my 99 uk turbo 2000,full decat, sti version 6 topmount and boost controler,****1n awesome off the mark loved that car and turbo wined loudly after blipping throttle, was ace.never had it mapped tho still going strong 4 years later,I would NOT advocate a car not being mapped after these mods so dont follow what i did,get it mapped and it should be safe, carl.
