Best turbo 2000 turbo upgrade?
I have a turbo 2000 that's just had a rebuild. I want to get advice on which turbo I should upgrade to from the td04, I know I will need other upgrades but what should I get. I want to be in the 320bhpish region. Some people say td05 but I've been told theyre to laggy. Others say a vf. I've just lost a vf30 I was bidding on on eBay, it went for £170. I don't want to spend more than £200ish quid so what u reckon??

I would reccommend a vf34 also ,but If you read the op's first statement he lost out on a vf30 for £170.00 ,and wants to spend about £200.00
I watched a mint vf34 sell on ebay 3 weeks ago for more than 4 X £170 ,so yes it will make that power but you wont find a knackered one going for £200 .
As stated above a vf 28 will make that power with a few decent supporting mods ,as most people tend to go for the vf 35. Just check
around and try and find a decent one (P1 owners club is a good place to start).Mine cost me £150.00 collected and is still going strong with good midrange any very little lag .

VF28, stonking turbo cheaper to get than a VF34 and every bit as good
I can honestly say that a VF34 is not a worthwhile upgrade over a VF28. I've had both and the 28 was every bit as good as a 34.
Vf28 with the right mods will easily make 330, mine made 360, screaming its **** off at 1.5bar but it was a built engine with just about every mod going, it was on there to run the engine in before bigger turbo purchase.

+1 for the above ,mine currently running at 330 bhp 327 lb/ft,which makes a worthwhile upgrade on a std uk car ,just remember to upgrade your brakes aswell.

Are all these on uk tubbies? I have a prodrive pack 2000. I assume this will need a map to run a vf28 as i wouldnt imagine its as simple as a bolt on upgrade but again heard the prodrive ecu can't be mapped so more funds would be needed to get a stand alone. Heard so many different things, like the uk2000 internals/gearbox/clutch are made of butter compared to a WRX/STI and would not take the power upgrade well???
Or would funds just be better placed spent on a classic sti?
Lol sorry abit of a rant cheers anyone who helps

Your best bet would be to do as i did imho, sell your prodrive ecu for £250 - £300,then with that money you can buy a std E3(AE800/801) ecu for £40 -£60,then get a Vf 23,28,29,30,35,etc with the rest of the money . Well worth buying a 3 point boost solenoid as well ,and then bolt it straight on and then choose a reputable man to map your car.
Secondly yes , a lot of uk cars opt for the upgrade and gearbox is good for up to 340 -350 bhp.You can buy a classic sti ,but just because it has a stronger engine dont mean it wont go bang. A std uk engine wont rev to 8250 rpm,but a sti one will & many posters on here have had probs with jdm engines as well as there uk counterparts, alsoa few people have had over 400bhp on uk cars using std internals ,so dont believe all you read.As to uk engines not taking the power well try asking some of the mappers on here what % of cars they map ,bearing in mind that a sti is a rapid piece of kit straight out of the box,and might be worth considering.

I ran 385bhp on my uk tubbie for two years with no issues before i killed it on methanol. I was running a forced performanced td05 18g with all relavant suporting mods. That turbo was not laggy and spooled 450 rpm quicker than a standard td05 18g. I recently sold that for next to nothing in comparison to what it cost me. I wouldnt push a uk box over 300 bhp as they are deffo made of butter. The best turbo if you want quick spool and good mid range is one of andyforrests tdo4 hybrids. Same spool characteristics as standard td04 but don't run out of puff like the standard td04. One mapped correctly on a uk car will peoduce in the region of 330 bhp and will
Make for a ver respectable road car. Not sure on price of second hand units but there are some about.

Cheers guys I think Im just going to have to be patient and wait until the insurance comes down for an sti, plus when coming to see the 2000 all the money spend modding it might aswell be flushed down the loo...

You could buy a Sti and it could still go bang on you

Hi guys thanks for all the input. Have gone for a vf35, it cost me £200 and it's in good order. Just gotta carry on running in rebuilt engine, then simtek ecu, fit my walbro, and induction kit (assume it will be fine running mafless on simtek) then a nice remap. What figures do you think I'll get roughly??
