My wife's H6 Outback hasn't had a gearbox oil change for about 5 years now - the local garage has told us that if it isn't broke, don't change it, since the car has done over 100k.
Is there any truth to this ?
The car does occasionally tow a caravan.

I'd recommend changing it. But not using one of those machines that suck it all out. I have only heard bad things doing it that way.
I do mine every 30K miles with a filter change, which gets just over half of the fluid out. Then after about 5K miles I just drain it again, which is about a litre. It's still pretty clean every time I change it.
I would rather do it more frequently than have to have a new gearbox
