hi and thanks for takign time to read this little problem
well im hoping its just a little problem.
anyways
my mate dropped his scoob with me this morning
no power !
car runs mint otherwise but only like a straight 2.0l
at 3k revs when the turbo should be cuming in and pushing you back a little... well its like its not kicking in.
when i do a standing take off its same. very very flat.
ive look at the pipes to what i can see from the top and all looks ok
only mod on this car is a dump valve. which is blowing off when i press the car a bit.
so pressure is deffo there.
just no full on power.
the car has just had an engine rebuild at £2400 which i told him was a disgrace at that price. teh garage told him to run it for 1000 miles for it to bed in and what not.
the car has since done 1400miles and its still same.
has any1 got any pointers i could check on the car.
was thinking the wastegate !!! turbo dont seem to be spooling up if you ask me !!
thanks

WHY do people put aftermarket dumpvalves on these cars? ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
First off, the dumpvalve should ONLY blow off when you cahnge gear at higher revs/boost. If it's doing so any other time, it's no good. Change it for a STANDARD recirculating type, which is best for the car![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
It could be the wastegate, mine needed to be adjusted once, the car, as you say, lost most of it's boost.
But check the d/v first.

yeah i asked if he had the standard one to hand. but not sure if he has
i also asked a friend of mine who has them.
thats the first thing i looked it, dismantled it and cleaned it up and regreased it up.
it does blow off a t the right times tho.
how does one adjust the wastegate ?
some1 said to take the circlip off the waste gate to test c if its fully closing.

the wastegate is fully closing tho i may tighten it up a tad with 1 turnon the adjuster.
it seems a little sluggish on a slow start going thru the revs !
ORIG dump valvew back on now.

orig dump valve was no diff.
still sluggish.
ill tighten it up 2mo if it lets me tho the adjuster is very rusty.
ive been checking all the pipes.
had the intercooler off checking etc.
will take it for a drive tomo

has it had an engine change in it's past? That looks like a newage maf and throttle area to me?
I thought the MY99 (which I have) & MY00 were the same?
someone correct me if I'm wrong please?

its had a engine rebuild
its a Y-reg 2000 i believe.
i remember my99 had the coil pack on the top of the engine too.
puzzling me why its like this tho
like its not boosting
could do with a boost guage tbh

Has it got the restricitor pill in?
take a look at the picture below for the boost pipe arrangement.
http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/uploads...oid_system.jpg
also, in the picture your actuator's not connected to the wastegate unless of course you know about that.
a leaky up pipe could cause boost problems aswell.
I'd ask a few more questions about the engine aswell, cos it deffinatly looks like a newage arrangement. I'm not sure if the MY99/00 ecu's work properly on the newage engines, The ecu should either have E3 or Y7 (MY99/00) not sure when they changed.
Also look to see if there are any stored codes by connecting the blocks underneath the dash.
How to here

I am no expert so I may be wrong, but I'm sure someone will put me right

thanks again mate
that pic is top notch. bookmarked that 1
ill check in the moring about that pin
i know when i had my other scooby my99
i put a 2003 enging in there but had to swap inlet manifolds as they were totally diff.
then the car wouldnt start and was told to change the timing pulleys. then it grafted
this restrictor pin was missing on mine which a friend in york sorted for me when i took it to him for checking.
thanks

ok update guys.
bin playing some more today
mate lent me a boost guage that goes to 1.5bar so all good there
just need to go get a T piece n some pipeing for it.
at least now i can see if its at vaccume on idle and boosting upnder load.
also i put it all back together this morning
and it seems to be spooling up, not as much and there does sound like a hiss somewhere when im giving it some
any ideas which lines may or could be split ???
should i be looking at all the inlet side and the boost lines ?
PS teh restirctor pin in the boot line T piece is not presant either.
is this nessasary ? or can i leave it without it ?
thanks

also engine management light is on now
i have the ecu explorer.
but how do i make a lead up to talk to the ecu thru obd2
its says its on an normal comms port. but what are pinouts
i could reset this ecu then
ok so connecting up the boost guage....
i tested somethgin while the engine was idling.
i pulled the boost line apart at a seperator. ... the engine did nothing
im sure it should of bin up n down !!!!
i put it back together n unplugged teh boost controller...nothing again !
is this right !!1 im sure it should be stuttering if i do this with the boost line !!
so upon connecting the boost guage
it never moved on firing up the car !! im sure it should of had a vaccume !!! and gone below the normal mark !!
so i took it for a run.... 0.4 bar and will not go above this.
also i can hear a leak somewhere too.
just not sure where is should be looking.
i can strip it all down yeah.
im thinking the soft rubber pipe that goes from air intake to the turbo may be split !!!
thanks

If the 10th digit of the VIN is a 1, then its a newage MY01 Bugeye REGISTERED in 2000.

0.4bar is actuator pressure, you may have a problem with the control solenoid, or as mentioned before the acutator arm not set right.
to use ECU explorer as a fault code reader you just need a VAG - COM obdII cable available on ebay (around (£20ish) as that works fine,
not sure if joining the connectors under the dash as per scoobypedia works on your car to get the fault code.
as you have a cel light on now it may help the find the cause

CEL light is most likely going to be boost related CEL. Low boost is almost undoubtedly caused by lack of the right restrictor pill in the j-pipe turbo line. Have you fitted one yet?

yes ther is a restirctor in the T pipe now on the turbo side as the above thread mentiosn where to put it.
would it be an idea to take the actuator arm off and hole the wastegate shut with a spring and test the boost presure ?
or should i try source a second hand wastegate ?
just to answer a noob question on wastegates, should the arm push the wastegate open upon boost or should it hold it closed ?
also when you are stood still and rev the car up high, should the actuator arm open the wastegate ?
as the actuator is setup on the car now as its idling the gate looks closed to me.
thanks

im thinking i should try source a wastegate actuator before i start taking off the inlet manifold to look for leaky pipes
then ?
just to check the actuator is sat right should it be closed on idle ? and push towards the driver under boost to open the wastegate ?
cos as this one is now its setup as tho its closed.
thanks
dave
