either really. Be more tempted for a 5w40 if standard, 10w40 if modded.
10w40 is normally the standard semi synthetic they put in (shell helix or the likes though there are a few fully synthetic 10w40's about, remembering that the 40 is the hot weight so there will be virtually if any difference between a 5w40 and a 10w40 when hot), 5w40 is the alternative fully synthetic subaru recommend (shell helix ultra or similar), if your modded then go for a 10w50 (track days etc).

its a standard 2000 turbo on an X plate.
would elf 5w40 fully synthetic be ok its what i run my renault on and have some left over.

I would agree, I did a lot of reading here and opted for 15w50, according to the garage I use, they have never needed to do a rebuild on a car that uses 15w50, mainly 5w40's come in for rebuilds.
