Default Downpipe with sports cat or decat, plus remap

Hi everyone

My car is a 2006/07 hawkeye STI with PPP. I'm thinking about getting a downpipe with sports cat, ideally 100 cell if possible, or maybe downpipe with a full decat however I know it is going to be a hassle changing it over each time for MOT (don't fancy paying £50-£100 extra each time I do an MOT) but the power gains are supposed to be pretty similar with either sports cat downpipe or decat downpipe. The PPP has already removed the second cat, and I have it includes a high flow fuel pump.

I am then immediately getting a remap tweak following the above.

My question is to those that have had a decat or sports cat downpipe fitted - how did your car feel after getting a sports cat or decat downpipe, then remap... did you feel a lot better response from about 2500rpm or did the change really come in about 3500rpm or after?

Thanks for any info and comments.
Cheers
Matt

I removed the downpipe cat that is very restrictive and replaced the under car decat pipe with a hawkeye cat pipe to keep it MOT happy

The turbo spools a lot quicker, If your car has a ppp fitted as mine did you need to get an Ecutek remap after you change the downpipe otherwise it will throw CEL lights and maybe boost spike (not good)

Changing the downpipe isn't really that hard (as long as the bolts come undone)

Hope this helps

Hi Matt not sure.but you have fitted all ready sport cat, this flow more than catted downpipe. And really if you have catted downpipe you should have look for sport cat(these usually cost around £250-£400) if you are worry about MOT.

Thanks for your replies. I've looked on Hayward and Scotts website but they dont appear to offer sports cat downpipes for a hawkeye STI. They only advertise a full decat downpipe. I am ideally after a 100 cell sports cat downpipe. Do you have to contact them specially for a sports cat as it's not in their website? How much was it. Who did your mapping?

Thanks again.
Matt

i ordered my HS pipes through EclipseRacing
http://www.eclipseracing.co.uk/product.asp?id=1002

i believe teh wrx sti has the same fitment, but not 100% sure... Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be able to back that up.

Thanks for your reply. I spoke to Hayward and Scott today and they confirmed they do offer the 100 cell sport cat for hawkeye STI, same or similar to yours. Duncan is very good. He remapped mine yesterday. Very pleased with the response in top end. Id highly recommend Race Dynamix to anyone thinking of getting their car remapped.

How does your car feel low down the revs like 2500-3500?
Thanks again

spot on tbh, it has very similar spool to the original TD04, but a lot harder.
it pulls from around 2500-5000 then starts to tail off, best part is motorway, 70mph 5th gear and the pull is instant no lag, which is good for overtaking, only thing i have to watch out for is how long i keep my foot planted, as it gets to 100 pretty quick

The garage that fit my H&S said that it was perfect fitment, so cant fault them at all.
As i say the note from the exhaust now its bedded in is brilliant, its got the scooby burble back and i havent had to change the headers/manifold

Matt i notice your only in sussex, im in kent so not a million miles away.. your always welcome to come up and see what they sound like with the Sports Cat

Hi Rob yes I'd definitely like to hear what your sports cat sounds like some time. Do you know if Duncan mapped your car exhaust to "pop" a little (ie make it a bit noisier)? He offered that to me. I didn't go for it this time as I wasnt sure but may do it next time as I quite like the idea. My old golf used to do it when I went down gears and it sounded perfect.
Cheers

mine doesnt really pop as such but he did map it with a small amount of anti-lag, as you let off the accelerator, its a really deep sound, i havent heard it from outside the car yet but my mates have all said it sounds nice. (Kinda V8 like noise apparently)

Does the anti-lag reduce the turbo lag so it spools quicker lower down the revs (as it does in full blown rally cars) or is it more for the noise?

Yup it reduces the lag slightly, its nowhere near as savage as rally cars anti-lag and TBH is hardly noticable, but mine definately spools just as quick as teh TD04 with no antilag

Thanks Jura. That is very tempting as a 100 cell one is more than double the price.

Do you know what bore size was your Hayward and Scott sports cat downpipe - was it 2.5" or 3"? I know the standard bore on the hawkeye STI is 2.5". I assume the turbo outlet the downpipe connects to is also 2.5".

Standard exhaust on Subaru is still 2.5" and you have also 2.5" downpipe.

Thanks. Do you know if Cobra offer a 2.5" sports cat downpipe as their site only lists a 3" one unfortunately?

matt,

correct the TD04 is the standard turbo on wrxs, they arent great but they spool quickly.
I think its a VF43 on your model tho.

All the GB270 is, is a WRX with PPP and a few looky looky bits added on

The GB270 does look good though. It was on my list to go and see before I bought mine but I never got to see it. I did the deal on the STI before I saw it. Lovely cars though and very sought after.. far more exclusive than the STIs.
