Question do different oils give different oil pressure?

i use silkolene pro s/titan 10-50 oil and have done for many years now.

when my ening is around 80 deg or just under oil pressure at idle is 3 bar. at 90 deg (oil temp) it is around 2.5 bar and when it is getting around 100 deg it is about 2.2 bar.

when driving at these temps it is 6 bar

if i changed to another oil, would it give me 3 bar pressure when the oil is getting 90+ deg, or are my pressures fine how they are?

thanks
ian

I would say pressures are fine. I noticed my idle pressures increased with the increased thickness of oil, as you would expect really..

Seem fine to me. It stands to reason that as the oil heats up it becomes thinner therefore the pressure will decrease slightly.

Those pressures seem perfectly normal for the viscosity of oil you are using. If you changed to a lower viscosity eg 5/40 you would notice a small drop in your pressure readings. Don't forget, pressure is not the have all and end all, a good flowrate is essential for proper lubrication.

i have a rcm oil pump in.

am thinking about fitting a oil cooler as on warm days on the m-way doinf around 70-80 oil temp will be 95+ deg and tbh i think that is a little high, so hopefully a cooler will help that out

95+deg is not high and not worth an oil cooler. I managed to see over 110deg C on the road, hence why I have one, especially for track. But for anything below I wouldn't bother

i was just wondering if it ranlow 90 deg all the time it would be better for the engine?

I did 600 miles at the weekend with probably 200 very hard miles and never saw above 95 degrees. I have asked the question before what the ideal temperature for optimum lubrication is but never got a definative answer. You can get an oil cooler with thermostat so it only opens up when required.
My old RB5 used to get up to 120 degrees on track which always worried me

In my (humble) opinion, even the thermostat opens too early and makes the car take a while to get up to temp, especially if you jump straight on the motorway or such. Unless you've seen high temperatures all the time I wouldn't bother. Use the money somewhere else

At 110 I'd ease off...

At 115 I'd back off...

At 120 I bought an oil cooler with a 'stat.

Your's is fine.

P.S. i remove the oil cooler system through the winter any...

my driving is to the shops and the odd bit of foot down. dont do track work.

a mocal oil cooler set up with a stat works out around 150-200.

by using one, would it cause any problems? think it said the stat opens at 80 deg

Won't do any harm.
If it kept the oil temp to low then it may be an issue but with an 80 degree stat it would only be a good thing IMHO

bttt with this thread.

it was cooler today, and on a drice the oil temp only got to about 80-82 deg c on the m-way. in services it went up to around 85 ish deg c.

the stat for my oil cooler opens at 80 deg c.

but my question is, is this to low temp for the road?

im running a 10/40 oil (recomend by oilmad for the lower temps, was using pro s 10/50)

thanks
ian

about 90degC is considered the optimum temp and thats the temp I use on the engine dynos at work.

80degC seems a bit low to me. I would open the oil stat at 95degC.

i run motul 10-50 oil and i get very similar pressures/temps

cold idle around 6.5 bar
warm idle around 2.1 - 2.2 bar
warm driving - around 6 bar

i had a mocal oil coller on and temps very rarely went over 80 degrees so i had it removed and now temps normally average around 90 whilst driving on road and sitting in a bit of traffic, never goes above 100 though really.

I have covered 1/2 of the oil cooler in thermal tape, and will see how that goes
