Engine Check Light on 06 WRX
I have a 2006 Hawkeye WRX. Have been running almost standard with just back box and HKS ssqv for couple of years and has been totally trouble free.
As I plan to fit a vf48 and various other parts I have soon and get some decent power, over the break I fitted a 2006 spec C STI intercooler and hood scoop under tray. Car ran fine for 2 days no issues what so ever and no difference to normal.
However..... couple of days ago I started the car and the Engine check light was on all the time. Rang Duncan from Race dynamics who very helpfully talked me through resetting the ECU by turning the car on/off more than 5 times. The light finally reset after the 7th attempt. Car again drove fine with no issues for a day. Started car yesterday morning and the light is back on.
Last night I refitted the standard recirculating dump valve as somebody had told me that as the intercooler is more efficient the HKS might be causing problems. Disconnected the battery for 10-15 minutes, re-connected and Check Engine Light still on. ARGH.
Off to get the code read by Subaru first thing tomorrow morning and see whats wrong.
Any ideas? STI TMIC should not cause this to happen. Very odd. Maybe i'm just unlucky and something unrelated is wrong.

Hey Doug, howz life without a scoob?
been looking at code readers today in Hellfrauds, Argoose and fleebay. Surely Subaru wont charge £80 to plug the diagnostic machine in to the port? Flippin hope not or i'll be having words with my mate in the service department! haha.

Life is a little less expensive with the diesel haha!
When it was winter my auto headlight adjuster light came on, went to Subaru they had a look under the car for nothing but when I asked about plugging it in, he said that it would be £80!!
Needless to say I left it there and after winter the light went out!!
Sure it's nothing to serious.

It seems Subaru will take you for every penny they can get. I took mine in to Rochdale for ABS diag and after an hour and half and £98 they could'nt find the fault and said it was a wiring problem. They said they'd need it back for an afternoon and £450 worth of "investigation". I phoned my bro, who is a mechanic and he came round and found a connector that had been unplugged, job done in ten minutes. I'm pretty sure experienced Subaru mechanics would have seen that connector sticking up at the side of the fuse box in the first hour and half of diag they charged me for.

On a different note, Stan palmers here in Carlisle would hook up a Select Monitor and look at codes for free.......as long as they had a bit of warning so I could bring it in when the tech might have a bit of spare time
The CEL you have could be a few things, if you do look at the codes yourself have a look at the historic codes.

sounds very much like the age old issue of secondary air pump system malfunction... only puts a cel code up in a morning or first start of the day, as thats the only time its ever used

If it is that, for the 06 hawkeye can't the OP just get that error mapped out as it has no effect on engine running. I had heard that for the hatch the ECU has a bit of a hissy fit and the system actually needs mending ?

hatch and hawkeye run the same system

was only introduced on the 2.5 turbo engine. basically sends fresh air direct into the exhaust for 30 seconds on cold start to get the cats to work faster to keep emissions down

Nope. Car CEL light on all the time when cold or hot. Just reset ecu when car hot and fault still there.
Just put standard intercooler back on and car totally back to standard, checked every plug and wire and fault still there after another reset. Just won't go away.
Guess I'll have to see what subaru find tomorrow morning. Charging me minimum of £44 to look.

Well £55 later to plug the fault code reader in at Subaru and found out the fault totally unrelated to anything I fitted. Was a fault with the dreaded secondary air pump system. Great! Fault seems to have cleared for moment so gonna watch it.
Will be buying myself a code reader to check & clear the fault if it happens again. Does anyone know where the port is located in the car to plug a code reader in to?
Thanks. Andy

Yep. Had a look into that, cosworth do the blanking plates for the block for £35 ish and then get Duncan to map it out. Certainly cheaper but does mean some fiddling around on the ramps.
Had a look at my codes, P1410, P2433 & P2444. They all seem to point to the pump working too much or staying on rather than a valve being open/closed as the codes for this are different. Little plastic pump still £700 though from what I’ve read.
May go down the blanking route if it comes back. Will be getting myself a code reader which will save me a fortune in Subaru main dealer costs & time!

I bought one of the generic OBDII cables off ebay which comes with software to allow you to read and clear trouble codes and reset the ECU mate.
Cost £14.99, thought might as well take a chance and it's been well handy.

As I said yesterday
It will come back on Thats a sure fire fact. The system on the hawkeye is Crap. It lets condensation into the pump and the valves start to seize up.. seen this too many times in the last year. to sort the whole system is around £1500-£2000 if its gone with the air pump too
