car random cut out on startup

bit of a strange one this, happens randomly but has happened last couple of days, its an 04 sti
problem is you fire it up and it takes a few turns and fires into life, then dies down again until it cuts out, UNLESS you give it a bit of a rev and it is alright and idles fine, does not happen when warm or starting up after being driven for a bit?
its almost like not enough fuel is getting in on startup and you need to give it a bit of throttle to get it going?
