Default Petrol fumes from cabin

Hi,

have had a decatted exhaust installed (3") and unsure if it's related but am getting a strong smell of petrol fumes in the cabin.

It seems to happen randomly although more so where I've given the car some stick (currently doing some WOT run's to do some tuning).

Is there anything I can check and can this be sorted via mapping? - Graham is currently helping me.

It's been like this for the last 4-6 weeks and I'm in my car at least 90 mins a day - think it's making me ill

thanks guys

Tried the search, did we?

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...in-dealer.html

It's even on the same page as your question

lol - I'm aware of that one but I wouldn't call the last few weeks 'cold' so the known issue of the fuel rails shouldn't count?

Unless my idea of cold is different?

The smell is not just first thing when getting into the car (which goes away when the heat makes the rails expand) but whilst driving and after parking up. - this seems to suggest it's something else?

My fuel pump seals weren't seated correctly when I upgraded to a Walbro.
The fuel then started to rot the seals quite quickly, leading to a strong smell of fuel inside the cabin.
Changed all of the seals which solved the problem.

I'll check these mate - thanks for the tip.

I have just noticed the metal 'flap' that allows access to the fuel pump has worked it's way loose.

Reckon I can check myself or shall I take it to a garage?

cheers

Just checked the fuel pump and it seems secure - never been messed with but the oval shaped metal cover that covers access to it was floating around the boot!

Do you think that could be the cause of the smell?

Could be part of it, use some non-setting sealant on it before refitting.

Thanks mate - will check in daylight tomorrow.

I've checked the fuel pump and replaced the lid on the top with the foam thing too.

Tomorrow will check for a black box toasted the back of the car on the underside - does it have any distinguishing features? Have seen one a while ago but it looked like some kind of electrical thing?

Cheers bud

Assuming its a classic.. It should be inside the engine bay towards the drivers side headlamp. Black cylinder shape with rubber pipes on top. Can get clogged & cause fumes in cabin. Also I dont know how strong the smell is but when you have a decat it can be abit smelly.

So this is aside from the carbon container thing on the underside of the chassis then?

Its definately under the back of the car, apart from that and the things already mentioned the only other causes listed are a faulty drain valve or pressure control solenoid which look like there around or above the canistor.Or a faulty purge control solenoid on the intake manifold.

That came out wrong i meant a canister with carbon in it although after looking it up there no mention of it being carbon filled ,the box is made of cheap plastic
