speedo not working
i have my 1995 impreza wrx import, was driving car and noticed speedo stopped working so i removed the clocks and decided to take car up road to see if the cable end was turning,on driving i noticed the cable was not moving but when i put it in reverse i noticed now aand then the cable was turning but not all the time.the clocks are fne and wondered bieng mechanical cable is that the only thing that can go wrong apart from faulty clocks which is not a issue.

Speedo Cable is in 2 parts so could be top half or bottom which is faulty.
Any problems with the car at around 4500-5000rpm?

It's funny you should say about any problems at 4500rpm because my mates wrx has just had the speedo die and it now won't rev over 4500.
Any thoughts? It's a 96 wrx and is totally standard.

Check the speedo cable to see if it has broke/slit,if it has then the speed sensor will normally kick in sending the car into limp mode and usually a check engine light when you rev it hard .If the cable is ok then it may be the speedo head, either way no drama as you can get another one from a breaker for £10 -£15 for the cable or £20- £35 for the speedo.

cant understand that if i drive car with the clocks removed the cable doesnt turn round indicating a snapped cable,i removed top half of cable and spun the end and its not broke,so could the lower half wich bolts into the box be at fault and if car revs past 4500 rpm fine wat does this indicate, when i removed cable i pushed it in back of clocks and moved cable with hand the speedo moved wich should rule out faulty clocks.

If you drove the car with the clocks removed and you cannot see the cable moving it does not necessarily mean it is broke , on the gearbox end there is a circlip which can work loose sometimes check that this has not come off. Also are you using a speed converter ??,if so which one : behind the clocks or at the gearbox end ????.

Yeah like the guys have said above
If there is a fault with the clocks themselves it wont rev past 4500rpm as a safe mode and since they worked ok when you them manually that rules out fault with inner mechanism.
If you have a mechanical speedo convertor fitted that could fail, i beleive they just fit between the 2 orange couplings where cable joins together?.
Or it could be the lower part of the cable that goes into the gearbox?.
Or the two couplings where the cable joins together inside the orange sleeves?
Thats all it can be mate unless im missing something else

im using a behind the clocks speedo converter and i put top half of cable in back of it and span it and the other side of converter which goes in back of clocks moved so that cant be faulty

Ok mate ,now we are getting somewhere ,try pulling off your speedo converter from the back of the clocks and plug your speedo cable directly in to your clocks ,then reset your ecu,by either leaving the battery unplugged for a few hour or the link below :
http://www.jollygreenmonster.com/ecu.asp.htm
Once you have done this take your car for a run,but remember your speed will be in km/h and resricted to112 mph ,and see if the car still holds back above 45000 rpm. My guess is it wont and your converter may be playing up.If it does then it has to be the cable .
