Timing belt, waterpump and pulleys
Hi, I needed to replace my timingbelt, pulleys, pre-tensioner and waterpump. Any idea of what parts to use OEM or aftermarket? how much the parts are and where to purchase from? WRX turbo PPP 03 uk. Thanks.

I know its unusual but I got the belt changed at 55k without having anything else checked or changed, now 68k and have a slight wining sound which is not the a/c or alternator belt. So rather than having to go back and change stuff I'm thinking i'll get it all done......does that make sense or would you just replace parts as and when needed? Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

It is unusual to need All the parts replacing. certainly its highly unlikely the water pump will want doing. Its a mater of inspecting the idles and tensioner when the belts off to see what kit requires replacement. otherwise its just spending money for no reason. a complete kit is getting on for £300 I know mine has never had an idler replaced during its 102k mileage. its had 1 tensioner at 70k which i changed as precation and 4 belts in that time. As it goes i changed mine last week and all is in order with the idlers etc.
I change my belt every 25k by the way just to be sure its not gonna break

I'll try to price it up and get a list of parts when I get the chance and let you know mate. Just need to find out exact what parts I need....i sort of guessed them before, dnt know how accurate it is. Would be so much easier if we could buy a kit.

yep another thumbs up for import car parts, great guys to deal with & always in stock.
i did find however that graham goode (via the bay) did my classic cambelt for £36 ish from memory & they use their cambelt on their rebuild's etc, so a real bargain...

The kit is top stuff! Bought two complete kits last year eith all pulleys and tensioners came to £204 per kit as got some discount ;-)
It all was exactly the sam as what was taken off so genuine bits ;-)

I wouldn't bother with the water pump as its'll be very likely to be one of the pulleys or tensioner at fault.
If it is the pump it'll be bad luck. But you'll know what is making the noise as soon as the cambelt is off anyway.
All pulley and pump should spin fluidly but not freely and with a slight resistance and no play. If a pulley spins very freely, you'll note it sounds noisy too...thats because all the grease inside the bearing has dried out. If its stiff and noisy or snags as you turn it, its ready to seize or fall apart.
This should have all been checked when the cambelt was replaced. Even if the workshop manual omits to do so (it assumes a mechanic is trained to spot these kind of things ).
Oh and Gates belt. Best there is.
Some 'performance' belts don't have the same level warranty (i.e only 12months, whereas the Gates is guranteed to be defect free for the duration of the cambelt's service life ).
