Hello,
I have a little starting problem with the car.
I was having to hit the starter motor to get it to turn over. this was intermittent and seemed to occur more when the car was cold.
I have just changed the starter for a brand new one.
However, the problem still remains.
Any ideas??

Still having an issue with this. Thought it was a problem with the alarm/immobiliser. So I had it looked at by an auto electrician. He did something with the alarm system and the car started with no problems for a few days.
But first thing this morning and the car will not start. This seems to be an issue when the car is cold. I have not had this problem when the car is warm.
The starter engages but does not turn over. The battery appears to be in good shape and the starter and solenoid is a brand new Bosch item.
With the old starter installed, having someone hold the key in the start position and hitting the starter would make it turn over.
However, with the new starter motor in place, hitting it while the key is hold in the start position has no effect. It will still not start.
That is the strange part about this which I really don't understand.
Anyway, I left the car for 10 minutes, came back and it fired up straight away.
So, its not the battery, it is not the starter.
The ignition wiring seems to be OK, I will change the main earth strap that comes from the battery to the back of the gearbox later today to see of that helps at all.
Any further thoughts on this?
Thanks

the best thing to do is to check out if its the starter is by getting a thick bit of wire and bridgeing out the seloniod to the starter .put the wire from the main cable to the starter to the spade end of the seloniod and the starter should go

It's a brand new starter including solenoid.
But the above will see if there is any problem with the ignition wiring.
Only problem with that is it's n intermittent fault.

Has battery been checked. Properly? Thinking its ok isnt enough. Start at basics. It could have well been flat and because you tried to draw from it then left it ten mins. Its possible this could cause the battery to build a surface charge. Enough for a start.
Its also could be one of the connections on the battery. Is the any sign of acid on them?
Its well worth removing the terminals and cleaning them. Both leads and battery.

It has not been checked properly, no.
But if it was the battery, then why would holding the key and hitting the old starter motor cause it to turn over?

Yes, thats right.
But again, if it was the battery then hitting the old starter would not cause it to turn over if the battery was at fault.
It is a bit strange indeed.

it is, but stranger things have happened. It may ofcourse be the new starter is no good. Have you tried exciting it directly from the battery? just to be sure of the starter.
