can an induction filter be too big????
#2
Every Induction kit must be mapped, can be big or bigger, mapper must mapped this and this will suit your car.
Some small induction kit are very restrictive at 350bhp,some are restricted at 400bhp...
Mainly if you are going for bigger BHP,best is RCM big cone.

im thinking of a custom set up and filter will be twice the size of rcm(k&n) with possibly 2 cold air feeds, its a very large filter and im hoping that being a monster size filter that there are benefits rather than any hinderance?

If you pass 400bhp mark at this stage i would go for bigger K&N(or similar) like RCM,but under 400bhp i would go with size which will be no too big not too small..
How big you are thinking,sizes?

Two cold air feeds, can mess with MAF reading(i assume you are running MAF based ECU like Apexi or OE),one cold air feed is probably best or you can create own cold air induction kit(few ic hoses and filter which will go to wing/fender).

i will be running maf and power should be about 320.
its this filter....

plan is to do away with the oe intake pipe(the flexi one) and maf will be relocated in the place of this hose.(so it fits directly to the oe turbo intake pipe)the super large filter then bolted directly to the maf.

when i mean 2 cold air feeds its literally just to get a bit more cold air to the filter, will probably have a partition to keep engine heat out aswell,
i will be running maf and power should be about 320.

Not sure about the yours suggested K&N,i think this is used in Ford Explorer(F-150),but should be OK.
Here is this which i would suggest

the custom way we have designed would not allow for that type of filter, this is why we have selected one with the correct offset flange etc, this filter is very large and will fill a massive gap,why would you select that one?
it looks much smaller

I suggest this filter, due will be good up to 400bhp without the problem in near future.
Best is visit your nearest K&N dealer which hold in stock more than few and have look at sizes and try compare.

Yes agree if you are doing something like custom job,can be done as you suggest your filter.

can there be any disadvantages by using a monster filter of this size?
#12
what we have done is worked out the biggest possible gap for a filter, and looked at ones that are the correct offset/shape/size for the gap,the one i showed you is ideal for the gap and will fill a massive hole,of course we can put a smaller filter in there but surely the bigger the filter, the more air you can get into it?i will be running 1 or maybe 2 3"cold air intake pipes up near to the filter and hopefully will have a shield keeping hot air away, surely a filter of this size will be fine up to and far beyong 320bhp?

1 cold air pipe will be enough i think,i go with mine 3" and i have fitted RCM cone and this will be for enough 500bhp.
About the shielding of air filter don't know,i'm not using at moment, but looking on this, maybe next suggestion is Turbo blanket.
Disadvantage of all big filters is size and that's it...

how will the mapping go with a filter that is so huge?
i dont really not what is best to do,i know some people say "fit the biggest filter you can!"
well i can fit an absolute monster of a filter lol.maybe i should speak to a mapper?
i think i worry a little about it as its a completely different design of what "others" normally do.

I think Dynamix has the same APS induction as he had when running 450hp and he must be up near 700hp now.

i think i may have to look at things again, fit the fmic and go from there, with our plan of removing i/c water spray and black air duct we found that there is so much space for a filter providing we moved the maf closer to the engine, but not sure still if its an overkill fitting a filter that big?

Yes i understand your thoughts and worrying, but main reason fitting of "normal" cone filters is maybe purism, but design which allow flow.
This your suggested filter is different shape, but will work as others.
Fitting big filter on your car don't/can't be overkill.

I would have thought fit for purpose and as small as required so's not to cause a restriction. Bigger doesn't mean the turbo will pull more air or that the engine will burn more fuel.

Best will be contact your mapper and this will advise,i've before fitted HKS racing Suction kit, which has been fine for 350bhp,but for 400bhp(now for 500bhp) will be restrictive.

not sure,i dont think it is an issue as there are many people running huge power with filter in engine bay, thats what im planning to do but using a very BIG filter and a cold feed and probably a heat shield to reflect the engine heat away from filter.

Best as above go with big filter like RCM,yes is pricey, but you can build your own filter(if you have look at Opieoil),which will be cost lots less.
Your suggested air filter is different shape, but will work as above mentioned, just shape is different which doesn't mean will not flow enough air.
