Default resonator box on air intake

Morning folks,

can anyone tell me what the purpose of the resonator on the air intake hose (1993 JDM wrx) is for?
presumably it would be a very bad thing for it to have a hole in it (as mine does!) to atmosphere as unmetered air would be getting into the engine?
The hole looks like it would be roughly in the centre of the underside of the box. It would appear that someone has wrapped it in electrical tape to try and block it up, but the tape has rubbed through where box rubs on the inner wing. (I am running a cone filter which just sits on the inner wing and can therefore move around).

Can it be removed?
If not why not, and where's best to get a new one (assuming I need one)?
Alternatively, anyone got any alternative tips on sealing up this hole?

thanks,

mark.

PS will get some pics of the box tonight just to make sure what I'm talking abotu is clear.

from looking at the internet it sounds like the hole may be related to the boost control solenoid?
I'm not running a dump valve so also not sure if it could have been related to that?

I'm sure you can get a resonator box delete pipe from somewhere.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

for the classic <96 it was there to quieten down induction Roar when boosting, yes it can be removed but you will need the adaptor for it as the idle control and boost solenoid run to it, they come up cheap on here..

Was aimed at the Op mate

You don't need one of those for a V1/2 classic have you seen whats in the wing ?

It's tiny, if you want rid just cut it beyond the airbox into the inner wing
