Default Tranny OIL for my Crunchbox !

Hi, i am looking to change my transmission fluid when i service on my WRX PPP 03 UK. I am currently on 68k on my WRX PPP and just wondering what grade and make is recommended.

I have no issues with gearbox, apart from a slight crunch only in 1st gear when the clutch pedal is engaged and shifting into gear quickly after that, is very smooth when i wait a second or two before selecting gear

Don't know if that is any useful info but hope it hepls someone experienced so i can get the right oil to eliminate the crunch, hopefully

If anyone's having the same issue pls shead some light, Thanks.

Ok, i'm either going for Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Motul Gear 300 or Redline 75w-90 GL5 as i've positive feedback for these, heard Royal Purple is a waste! And mixed feedback on Uncle Scotties Cocktail, which i was getting so close to using when the 1st gear crunch started but have decided against that now.

Can anyone pls tell me how much I'd need for a full change? and also for the diff aswell. Thanks.

I had a bit of a crunch 3rd to 4th. Castrol syntrax has sorted it for the time being. Think it was 3.5 litres if memory serves me correct.

It takes 3.5L according to my figures.

Syntrax (Castrol Universal as it's now called) is a decent oil, but not the best and to my knowledge, still out of stock in the UK. If you want the best, I'd go for the Motul Gear 300, it just seems to always work well in Impreza gearboxes.

Cheers

So which would you recommend if both was available? Castrol Syntrax or Motul gear 300? It seems like Castrol could help with the 1st gear.... are any others designed to do the same?

I'd go for the Motul, it's an ester based synthetic oil, making it the top level of oil available. The Castrol is a semi-synthetic, so okay, but nothing special.

Do you have any idea of how much of this stuff I'd need for gearbox and diff? Thanks.

You'll need 5L (3.5L gearbox, 0.8L diff)

Thanks for the order. If it doesn't work out, I'd be very surprised.

Impreza gearboxes can be a little fussy, but the Gear 300 is the oil that always seems to do the trick, unless the gearbox has some serious issues.

Personally I think it's the oil as it only starts doing it when the car's warmed up, fine when just started.

Yes, to me that sounds like the oil was past it's best and needed replacing.

Lol so many people have diff opinions! I'm not too fussed as long as it goes away and I don't need to change for a while. Hopefully the oilman has sussed it out for me ;-) Ps i've not heard anything negative about Motul yet....

The Lightweight Shockproof is brilliant stuff, but I honestly don't think you'll need it as to me it sounds like the oil just needs replacing

That's pretty much the way I see it. Shockproof oils are good for different things to conventional oils. The most common use (even though it's not what they were designed for) is worn gearboxes, they cover up the problems. Their main aim is things like straight cut gears etc. To me, it just sounds like the gearbox needs fresh oil and the Gear 300 is one of the best.

Cheers

Tim

Hi guys, had it serviced a week ago. The motul 300 hasn't sorted the crunch, although alot smoother in all gears and downshifting into 1st at just above 20mph. Does anyone think I should try Redline LWSP? Or is my gearbox faulty? Just like many others who have the same issue....

you shouldnt be down shifting into first. First gear should only need to be engaged when stationary or dam close to it. certainly not at 20mph. All gearboxes will be notchy while forcing them into first at 20mph or above.

Please Please dont keep putting it into first at those sort of speeds your going to be heading for a box rebuild

I dont mean to be rude, But my word Who taught you to do that?
