Thanks Guys, yes it was defo £4500 cos each cat was just short of £1700 each plus the labour to fit, well gutted..
I would be tempted at a decat system with a remap but not sure if they do one or where to source one from, any ideas?
Thanks again

Nice one cheers,
I know I'm not laughing. I have just bought it last month from Keighly Trade centre who are now not wanting to help in any way, all I could say is stay well clear of their or put people off if you know anyone who is wanting to buy a car from them.
Does anyone know if I can do anything about it, ie go to trading standards?

33.3 mpg
I got 33.3mpg on my way home from scotland aswell, which the subaru dealer couldn't believe. Not to sure if it is the cats, or maybe just the sensors with carbon build up on?. They want another £400 to investigate further. Just don't know which way to go.

erm.... $160 is about £100. you need 2 cats. that £200 + shipping plus import taxes. it's not even negotiable. £500 fitted say against £4500? I know what i would be doing.

Strangely enough my dealer has never charged me to hook up their select monitor........all they ask is for it to be dropped in when they have a quiet patch during the day
Since getting the SECS I've not had to call on them for a while but I doubt it's changed, unless you want it on a day they are PDI'ing cars for the new registration.

International Motors (IM) do not employ the staff at Subaru Dealers......Dealership employees just have to deal with the situation.. Just look at the Pro R debacle

Where are you, as Tony says an independant may be able to help

I have to agree on that point.......The cost of spares from IM (for example the OEM brake discs and pads are laughable) simply beggars belief at times !!
This does not mean to say that you can tar individual employees of Subaru Dealers with the same brush.

Something worth noting guys, if you do replace the cat with an aftermarket one, make sure it is type approved. New rules brought out if I remember correctly 2 years ago are informing MOT testers to be on the look out for non type approved cats on cars registered after 1st January 2001. They are to inform the ministry who will then deal with people by post.

Put it this way, Cats don't just 'fail' there is always a cause, and this must be found first.
Unless you whack them with a big speed hump. (Doubtful on a Tribeca unless its been offroaded).
OR most likely the car has been operated for a significant amount of time with an engine fault. This can be lumpy runny/lack of engine smoothness, lack of power, poor fuel consumption, check engine light, or just a strong smell from the exhaust (due to the cat being overloaded). A runing fault, even a minor one can over time overheat and melt a cat and render it ineffective.
These running faults MUST be diagnoised and fixed before attempting to replace the cats. Otherwise teh new ones WILL meet the same fate.
These cars use two sensor to ensure the is cat is present and operating correctly. They are also sometimes used to calibrate each sensor as well a provide adaption to the engine's fuel mixture. Now, some cars, like VWs are clever, their systems are actually quite good at working out if the sensor is at fault or teh cat is and the fueling readapts automatically once rectified
But on the other hand some systems are stupid; like the Denso system in a Volvo v70....it throws up cat errors when a sensor is dodgy and refuses to readapt teh fueling once the rogue sensor has been found and replaced. This leads to teh car running bad mixtures, still throwing up ramdom codes and eventually destroys the cat from it overheating.
By the way, I'm not assuming a sensor fault, its just one of the many things that needs to be checked....other common issues include vacuum leaks, valve timing issues and a faulty injector(s) amongst other things.
