Question Turbo lag

Hi I bought my 2007 wrx hawkeye 2months ago and I'm wondering if the turbo lag comes as standard, car has bov and is standard, well apart from prodrive rear exh and splr etc. I am not a complete loony but split seconds to overtake become quite interesting when you are waiting for the turbo. Can anyone give me a reason or is it just about being at the right revs etc before dicing with the grim reaper?
The car is amazing though.

Yes mate lag is just something you have to work with.
I can't get full boost before about 4000 rpm.eventually you will know where in the rev range it's best to go through the gears.
I usually let the revs creep up to 3000 and then plant it.
I change up at 7000 and it's right on boost again after the gear change.

Danny.

Thanks Danny i will have a play with the gears and turbo and see where I need to be. I also get the pssssss which takes time prob due to engine being cold and low revs? as usually happens after start up? My first turbo charged car so forgive my ignorance / lack of knowledge!!!
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Depends how bad it is, on a standard turbo it shouldn't be laggy at all.

Your just going to really confuse him with twin scroll

Basically you have to build up boost pressure to gain power, if you drop out of boost, ie take your foot off the gas for a few seconds and go back on again you will get what people call lag, a slight pause or delay until the pressure is built up again.
You have to learn to drive on boost, that means working the car and keeping the turbo on tune, keep the power up there and you should have very minimal lag on a single scroll turbo.

Stedee, hi it's just a bit slow to kick in sometimes, but prob due to driver error and not high enough revs wise as Danny suggests. It's my first turbo so it's just maybe me learning how to get the best out of it at the right time.

Thanks what's a twin scroll? Sounds good though!!
Tony thanks what would be the best rpm for a single for smooth and quick turbo use, so eg at 60 overtaking what would be recommended? Do I need to be at a constant rpm before turbo works straight away?
Any advice appreciated, thanks

As long as your revs are around 3500/4000 you'll be fine. Just make sure you plant the accelerator to the floor. No half throttle with these babies

If its a wrx ,will it not have atd04 fitted ???,in which case should not be laggy at all.I would recommend you buy a boost gauge for one ;as it will
A. show you what boost your car is currently running
B. It will be easier to see if there are any boost related problems which may occur in the future.
Failing that next time your on a clear road ,select 4th gear ,hold the car at 3,000 rpm and then floor it . There should be hardly any lag at all.

easy tigers,, lol

if you want to find out exactly what he means, go out in your car, start at 30 mph put it in 4th gear and then plant your right foot. Car will go knowhere fast.

now try being sat in second gear at 30 and plant your foot, off she shoots.

simply put revs are too low for a turbo'd car, they get there power from airflow, low revs = low airflow therefore no power. If you need to accelerate to oever take like that drop it one or two gears and go (depends on speed and situation if you need to go down one or two)

I think it's probably worth mentioning that even if you're at 30 in second, there will still be some delay, even though it will eb minimal!

30mph in 2nd gear , have you got a 6 speed box i'am normally just coming out of 1st in my 5 speed.

Only joking , as above should be minimal lag, you just need to work the gearbox to keep the engine in the powerband

Heres a video explaining turbo lag ,just ignore the driving at 30 mph in 5th gear bit as no one does that in a 400 bhp motor. After having driven my mates fq400 around brands hatch, when the turbo comes in , its like being kicked by a horse lol

By 'bov' I assume you mean it's got a non-std valve on there. If so, take it off and put a standard one one as a first step.

Thanks all for comments about my `07 2.5 wrx hawkeye 5 speed non sti.
I had a quick play on the way to work and seemed that below 3500 it pssssssd and stuttered when nailed to the floor but above 3500 - 4000 was spot on.
I tried 4th at 30 it reminded me of that Top Gear episode beaten by a shopping trolley!! - tidgy good call
Where is the best place to get a boost gauge fitted around Lincoln?
The blow off valve was told is on the intercooler? that makes the pssssss usally after gearchange up on accelerating.
I dont know what an atd04 is????
I`ll watch the youtube when I`m not at work!

A TD04 is the model of turbo fitted to your car, for example I have a VF36 fitted to mine, some one else may have a VF28 or a TD05 16G.
Lots of different turbo's depending on model etc.

Boost gauge is very easy to fit your self. Pop along to one of your local meets and I'm sure some one will show you where to plumb it in or probably do it for you

Where do meets happen in and around Lincoln?
Is there a relationship with oil pressure and boost?
On the way home cold engine 4000rpm and warmed 3500. Anything less and psssd and spluttered. Lesson learned. A mate has a golf with a supercharger which give instant boost? Would one of these work on a scooby? What day reckon? Or am I talkin tosh being newbie!
Cheers

A Supercharger is powered by the engine, so while it gives power , it also takes power to run it (bit like your air con pump)
A Turbo is powered by exhaust gases which are being expelled into the atmosphere and is free power for nothing.

What Do you mean that on your way home cold engine 4000 rpm warmed at 3500,as it is best to let an engine warm up naturally, especially an aluminium one, or it won't last you to long for sure.

For a Subaru meet nr you go to Subaru forums at the top of the page, then select regional Subaru ,then choose the area nearest to you.

Sorry for late reply 4th attempt keeps coming up wit server stopped responding! Server lag?!?
Thanks at 4000 when just starting journey turbo works ok. After a bit of time 3500+ seems to be about right. I was just wondering if anyone tried it and if it was worth doing? I'll check out the website a bit more and see what's happening locally.
Cheers
