Hi I would like to know how many people on here service there cars themselves who are not mechanics, I'm not talking a new clutch or anything but oil,diff/gearbox oil, coolant, brakes and sparkplugs as times are hard and I've got the fluids etc was considering doing the jobs myself, is there any of the above I should stay away from, and is there any novices tackled these themselves?

i do all my own servicing even engine builds, body work etc (final paint at body shop though ) and im a electrician. its not hard but on the impreza make sure the oil filter is full (can take around 20 mins till full ) and i always pull the plugs off crank and cam sensor and crank till full oil pressure before strike engine up.

I do all my own servicing on the wagon, would take on a clutch if I had time. I have rebuilt a Daimler Double six V12 from scratch and three skyline cambelts so it certainly pays to do what you can.

Hi the crank sensor is just under the alternator at the front of the engine. To obtain oil pressure after an oil change you can unplug the crank sensor and turn over the engine on the starter to prime the oil pump until the oil pressure light goes out. I use drive on stands when I change my oil.
