Default type r whirring.

hi,when i first purchased my 1998 sti type r it had a very loud exhaust fitted and i heard nothing untoward(obviously).
i then removed the loud exhaust and fitted something a little quiter to realise i have a whirring coming from the rear of the car.
its a constant noise and is very ennoying.
the previous owner had told me that the mot it had prior to me buying the car had one failure which was fixed...."excessive play nearside rear wheel bearing".
ive looked through the reciepts and found that the wheel bearing was not relaced but it was "checked, and then retightened"!
with a labour charge of £10 lol.
im assuming that this is what the whirring is,....i can not tell by listening if it is one side or the other and didnt want to waste money by replaceing wheel bearing/bearings/hubs/rear diff.
dosent seem to be any play in the either of the rear wheels and has recently flown through another mot.

so what is the best thing to do?
does overtightening a worn wheel bearing create this droneing/whirring noise?
if i drive and then select neutral and coast,it still does the noise,so im99% sure it is not drivetrain related.

i either look for both r180 rear hubs and swap the complete hubs over or start with wheel bearing replacement on the nearside,if the noise is still there i would then have to do offside,if its still there after that i would need to replace rear diff!
that is a very expensive way of curing a whirring noise!

what would you do and what the cheapest and best way of sorting it?
the car is absolutely perfect other than this noise which is starting to ennoy me so really want to sort it out.
thanks.

yes it still does it.
its defo not brakes and defo not tyres/wheels as i have tried two different sets.
i cant help but think is one/both rear wheel bearings.
even rich & fb tuning said it sounds like a wheel bearing but cant determine which side.

you should be able to work it out when hard cornering try both right and left hand down and see if the noise stops/changes
