Default dont be scared to use a buffer,it wont burn

hey guy's

heres a quick demo vid of how not to polish,

when we get customers in and they see me using the machine, they all say how scary it is and how they wouldn't dare use one, couple to the fact that theres so much bs on forums saying people should start with da polishers etc, i thought why not show a little vid, of how not to do it,

the setup:

one used subaru impreza door, the japs are know for having quite thin clear/paint, the polisher is a rotary polisher, it goes from 900 rpm to 3000 rpm, now the max i use when polishing will be 1300 rpm so less than half its full power, the pad is a 3m green fast cut pad, the hardest cutting pad 3m do, coupled with 3m fast cut again 3m's harshest compound, there is no sponge backing pad either.

i start at 900 rpm, then go up to 3000 rpm, and then back down, i put that much presure down i dent the panel lol

finally finished with a yellow pad and compound for pics after

heres the vid

here are the pics,

tried my best to show you the finish.

now im not saying go out and 3000rpm your car, but dont be scared to use the machine, on a low setting you'll be fine. there are loads of videos showing how to use the rotary polisher.

infact for £150 i could probably set you up with a life time supply of polish, wax pads and polisher to do your car with

thanks for looking..

ebay is a very good resource for stuff like this:

here's a list of what you'd need:

rotary polisher, - silverline do a good one for about £40-50

sponge velcro backing pad -3m 09553

50417 Perfect-it™ III Fast Cut Plus Compound 1 kg 1 Bottle
50487 Perfect-it™ III Compounding Pad - Green 150mm 1 Box

80349 Perfect-it™ III Extra Fine 1L 1 Bottle
50488 Perfect-it™ III Polishing Pad - Yellow 150mm 1 Box

50383 Perfect-it™ III Ultrafina 1L 1 Bottle
50388 Perfect-it™ III High Gloss Pad - Blue 150mm 1 Box

few microfibre rags too,

price of the compounds range from £20-£28 iirc, the pads are about £10 for a box of two.

3m are some if not the best product for polishing, and any one who does polish professionally will use them,

you can of course top this with a wax of your choice, ag hd wax is £25 from us, and is very good. it does need a little work to use, tbh i use ag radient wax, it goes on super easy, come off even better, gives good gloss and beading, and you can do a full car in 10 mins, i do mine once a week its that quick lol, bonus is its about £30 for 5litres

Had mine done by a so-called professional.

I later noticed that he'd gone right through the paint, right through some of the undercoat and even to bare metal on some panel edges.

Mug's game.

That's outrageous!

You must have been hacked off somewhat? Did you have to spend lots on a remedial paintjob, etc.?

That's the down side to this so called detailing industry. Anyone can buy the products and machine and say they can do it, or charge a fortune for it.

G3 is a very abrasive compound. Obs you need to take care on panel edges as you focusing more force upon them, our silver line is soft start and goes from 900 - 3000 rpm on normal jobs I'm never over number two which is roughly 1300 rpm, I've been machine polishing cars for over 12yrs though so it's second nature to me.

If they were a Pro they should have masked the edges up, name and shame if they are a proper outfit, save someone else going thru the pain.

Good thread. I'm looking at buying a DA for my car.

Will be using it on Ford,Vauxhall,SEAT & Honda paints.

I'm guessing with each make your get thicker/thinner paints.

I'll need pads for plastics like spoilers, bumpers etc.

I think what's been putting me off is the fear that ill burn the paint.

using a da will take alot of time compared to a rotary, you dont really need special pads for plastics, just lighter pressure, most manufacturer paint is very simular, some do put more clear on, most modern run of the mill cars are thinner now due to cost savings lol, there are only a few cars that have ceramic clear which is a pita to do.

my test for tomorrow for borrowing the depth gauge will be two fold,

one from a polishing angle, the second from a paint side of things,

if i have enough room on my trusty test door that is,

it will be sectioned into squares, then each square depth tested and results noted,

squares will be numbered:

1 3m fcp with green pad 3000rpm 30sec
2 3m fcp with green pads 1500rpm 30sec
3, grey scothed panel
4, 1500 wet flat panel
5, 1500 da flatted panel
6,polish box 3
7, polish box 4
8, polish box 4

when we prep blending panels we use 1000 disc on da, the equivalent of 2000 by hand, then we clear over it, so im going to grab a reading of a car going through the booth to see how much paint is added in a usual clear over base repair.

should make for an interesting read,

jake

3-2000 wet/dry by hand 30sec
4-1500 disc da 30sec

so pretty constant,

after i had done the test:

i then decided to polish the boxes 3-5

there final readings after being polished at 1500rpm with fcp were :

i decided to burn through box 1

http://www.flickr.com/photos/cuprajake/6498947993/http://www.flickr.com/photos/cuprajake/6498947993/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/cuprajake/, on Flickr

so on this particular door nearly 50 microns was clear coat, now would i have guessed it would be that much no, but i do know that we can do what we did to the box two quite safely on the main parts of the car.

make of it what you will its just something i have always wanted to test.
