Default grinding whining noise

hi

this morning on my1998 v4 wrx sti started overheating badly and only
cold air came out the heaters.
so i thought airlock in the radiator or thermostat problem.
so i went to autosave and bought a new thermostat.
when i went home i took out the radiator to get access to the thermostat
and changed it out and put back in the radiator.
it solved the overheating problem and hot air blows out of the heaters
but i i think when i disconected the 2 hoses to the power steering
reservoir that go over the radiator some fluid came out and the car makes a whining noise while
driving and when steering round a corner the steering wheel judders
a little bit and i opend up the reservoir and checked the dipstick
and it was reading ok.
when i disconected the two hoses could there be a air bubble in the
system that could cause this noise and how do i resolve this problem.

thank you

hi the pas system is self bleeding, top up the resivour to max on the small dipstick when cold with -auto transmission fluid/atf/dexron 2(all same stuff) if you overfill it will blow it out due to expansion. turn it lock to lock and whine should dissappear as the air comes to the top.

pas level could be low, if you checked when was hot it would read higher.

if there is air in the system would it make the whining noise which
is a little bit loud.
also do i take the cap off the reservoir for the air to come out and do i have the
car running when i turn left to right.

Hi theres no need just top it to max and refit cap and go lock to lock gently

you may actually need to top up further if theres lots of air in system

Id make sure the pas pump drivebelt not loose either ,the belt should deflect only a small distance when moved sideways. loose drivebelt will cause judder and noise.

edit ,yes car running mate

hi classicgc8

i think the the belt is fine as it didnt have this problem before i took off the radiator
and disconected the pas hoses and as soon as i put everything back on
it started to make the noise but i will check it just to be sure.
there was some fluid came out the pipe that i took the hose from.
do i need to take the reservoir cap off when doing lock to lock and does
the car need to be running when i do it.

thank you for your help

Annoying given you don't have to remove the rad to do the thermostat

I had to take the fans off to do mine. But only to make it more accessible.
