Question Ebay exhaust? are they s**t?

Hello all.
Had a look on ebay for an exhaust that isn't gunna brake the bank or be too loud. Any one ever bought or seen one? Are they crap?
It's for my 98 type r.
Saw this unbranded one that's a cat back for £200

Hiya mate,I don't know anyone that's tried one of those but I would tend to go with something that's not to cheap or unknown.
A decent exhaust doesn't have to be expensive though as I've just bought a cat back system for mine that didn't break the bank and is great quality.

That's a link to where I bought mine from. Its an afterburner centre and you pick which back box you want with it.
I did a lot of reading on here and decided on the ninja 2 back box which I'm very happy with.It sounds awesome but isn't over the top loud, and at £299 I thought it was pretty good value.

Cheers for the heads up
They look reasonable enough.
Just another quick ?
My car is completely standard. Would it be beneficial to go for a 3" system over a 2.5"?
Also do those back boxes go off to an angle or are they straight?

The ninja 1 and 2 are straight exit. The afterburner I think is an angled exit.
The 2.5 inch is the one to go for on a standard car.I don't think you would see any gains on a 3 inch system.
You'll probably find it runs quite a bit better once it's changed and the sound is awesome.

Cool. Not really planning on major mods anyway as the car is my daily driver and I don't wanna make it unreliable. Probably do just an exhaust, induction kit and remap. I think the angled back boxes look better, so I 'll go for the afterburner. Just had a quick look on youtube and that sounds nice and rumbley and not overly loud !

Fitted one of those exhaust's from same company. Nothing wrong with it great exhaust, specially once bedded in, then sounds amazing, only thing i found was the fit wasn't perfect, the bracket for the gear box would not line up. Which mean't exhaust was left hanging abit, which be mot fail i think.

Might be better fit on WRX

Ok sweet. Got my MOT in February, so I'll probably wait till then to fit it.
Did you find it was knocking about a bit?
Would it be easier to take off the hanger an re-weld to a better fitted place?

my afterburner fitted perfect and does sound good, you can get a straight afterburner too,

you sure you had the right exhaust for the right car? unless it was a dodgy exhaust?

No knocking came from exhaust, only down side was scraped on a few high speed bumps.

You`ll probably fine the cheap unbranded eBay ones will be a thinner stainless and less reliable welds. You get what you pay for.

I'd highly recommend the Hayward and Scott 2.5" system.
I bought mine in sections, 2nd hand via Ebay, over a period of about 4 months.
Got the H&S open mouth downpipe with some heat wrap for £90 fitted 1st, then, a 2.5" H&S backbox with 3.5" exit for £70 fitted 2nd.
This would've been enough but wanted a bit more vocals so replaced my Magnex centre section with resonator box with a straight through H&S 2.5" centre section for £50.
This doesn't affect the sound really unless accelerating hard so was a worthwhile addition.
Considering the original cost of these bits (about £600!) I feel I got an absolute bargain!
Take your time and keep your eyes peeled cos bargains keep popping up all the time. :-)

Agreed, Personally i`d rather go for a decent 2nd hand system as long as its in good usable shape than spend money on the unknown, As they tend to be unknown for a reason.

Reviving this thread as I've found it in a search and don't need to start my own. Some of my questions have been answered but still a bit confused on a few counts. Want a bit more power and sound out of my Turbo 2000, nothing overly loud though or if it is I need a removable baffle in case I fail a DB test at a track day. What's confusing me is the layout of the exhaust, I had a look underneath mine as I changed the oil today and can't see where the silencers, cats and joins are as it's all covered in heatshields! I want to get rid of both catalytic converters on mine as I want the best gains possible and I've a friendly MOT tester, but searching for a decat for mine brings back two results, a short decat 'up pipe' with a flexi joint, like so:

And bellmouth downpipe decats:

However, I've seen 'turbo back' systems advertised that don't include the up pipe. So where exactly does the up pipe fit in? The shape of the flanges look like the up pipe bolts onto the downpipe, but if it does how can systems without the up pipe be sold as 'turbo back' when in fact they're leaving a cat behind? I've looked for a standard exhaust diagram and haven't found anything so if anybody's got something that'll explain it it'd be much appreciated!

From looking at more pictures it seems like the up pipe fits in 'before' the turbo, and everything else is after. Is this right? Seems a little odd to fit a catylitic converter in the manifold before the gas has even got to the turbo if that's the case, but this is all new to me so I'm prepared to be corrected!

I bought that £200 exhaust the fit was sh1te so i tried to contact the company to arrange to have it returned but the scum bags would not reply to email or answer the phone.
Ended up having it rebent welded and modified cost me an extra £200, looks good and sounds good now but could have got a much better one in the first place with what it cost me.

DO NOT BUY IT

Big bit of advice in the Subaru tuning world is not to buy any junk from eBay!

Especially flexible jointed up-pipes and flexible jointed exhaust manifolds!

Only buy reputable companies products.....

You buy cheap, you buy twice!

Just thought I'd bump this as I'm still a bit confused looking for an exhaust system for my classic scoob. What's the difference between a decat up pipe and a decat downpipe?

A decat up-pipe goes from the exhaust manifold(headers) to the turbo. And the downpipe is what comes out of the back ofthe turbo housing to the exhaust centre sections.
They are both different parts of the exhaust system, one before and one after.

Hope this helps

From what ive read i think the wrx models have a cat before the turbo in the up pipe to the turbo, the sti's dont have a cat in the up pipe.

after the turbo theres a down pipe with a cat in it. The downpipe decat is for after the turbo and the up pipe decat is between the manifold up to the turbo on wrx's. if that makes sense. i dont know for sure but i think that as i read a bit about this before but im sure some one will correct me if im wrong

The cat in the up-pipe is only on new age wrx. As your talking classic. You wont need to touch the up-pipe unless going for major power

Spot on guys thanks a lot, I'd thought that was the case with the up pipe being before the turbo but wasn't sure, but if my classic turbo 2000 doesn't have a cat in it I won't worry!
