Default automatic/heated wing mirrors for a RB5?

am thinking out loud but is it possible to get wing mirrors for '99 impreza (RB5) to do any of the following:

-automatically open/close when switching engine on/off (this would be most useful for me)
-dip the mirror down when reverse is selected (quite useful to avoid kerb'd alloys?)
-a switch that heats up the wing mirrors to demist (maybe linked to the rear demister button?)

To the best of my knowledge, NO, NO and finally NO.

You'd need electric folding mirrors for a start, JDM part, would it not be more useful if they retracted etc when arming/disarming the alarm.

They are electrically adjusted, use your hand on the switch.

Don't think any Subaru's come with heated mirrors.

As above.
Mine will close/open, but only by the switch. There IS a trick to make them do it on ignition off/on, but I've not figured it, not fitted it.
And yes, you DO need JDM mirrors, not a simple fit on classics

Dipping is a definite no, you'd need some sort of memory in the circuit, beyond most of us.

And heated? Not afaik, I'm not sure if any newage cars have heated mirrors.
Do what I do, open the window and wipe it
This is a Subaru you're driving, not some pimped up Italian or German thingy

i'd certainly pay if someone could retrofit JDM mirrors onto my car, even if it is by switch..!

Find some, and either bring them here in the new year, or I will send you, or post a how to.

You need the mirrors, the switch with the open/close facility, some wire, and some new connectors.
Get back to me once you have the mirrors, there are usually some on ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Impreza-Cl...item4cfb7089a1

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Impreza-Cl...item4cfb917967

The last ones include a switch.

that last ebay auction looks good, will i be able to "re-use" my wing mirror housing by stripping the folding mirror guts out and transplanting or am i going to need to have it resprayed in RB5 cool grey?

edit: i assume that switch would replace my existing wing mirror controls in my centre console?

There was a tutorial on how to mod the original ones so they were heated. Not sure if it was this site but just google it. I was going to do it but thought forget it as I don't really know my car electrics. I can fit a stereo and change a bulb but thats about it lol.

I'd reply to your original questions, as below:

Yes (Fit JDM folding mirrors, then us a Major Sarcasm closer, sold on here)

No, not easily anyway

Yes, as mentioned a recent tutorial how to fit heated pads to your current mirrors can also be found on this site

For your new question, no, you can't swap the elec folding motor into the UK mirror. I tried. JDM mirror bases are cast metal, uk are plastic, so the fittings are in the wrong place, respray needed.

whats the likely cost of a respray? found a JDM in 86F and considering the higher cost (roughly double) of getting one in the right colour vs a respray.

silly question but whats a major sarcasm closer?

Due to the size of the item just prime and prep and then less then £20 for paint from Halfords.

what about the likely cost for someone who isn't very good at priming and prepping? is someone more professional likely to charge lots for a relatively small item?

There are loads of tutorials on how to do it. Just give it a try.

Not sure how much they would charge but get a few quotes.
