Default MY00 breather pipe question

I'm running the cam and crank breather pipes to a catch can on my MY00 UK Turbo. Would there be any noticeable performance drop or potential long-term damage if I didn't route the catch can outlet back to the turbo inlet pipe to return the 'pressure'?

I'm assuming it's gonna be nowhere near as bad as not recirculating the air as with VTA dump valves?

Has your can got 2 or 3 ports ? I've done similar but retuned back to intake pipe I'm using a cusco can what have you got and what size is your pipe work ?

Shouldn't be a real problem

Mine's got 2 ports, it's a small JPerformance one off eBay. Pipework is 11mm.

It's not a problem for me to run from the catch can back into the inlet pipe, I just want to know if there'll be any ill effects, however slight, from 'VTAing' the catch can outlet instead.

Hi,

On the cars which we fit an oil catch tank system on we vent the breather outlet from the catch tank down the transmission tunnel.

The RCM kit comes complete with all hoses to enable you to do so.

We've never had a problem, just run the breather hose down to the transmission tunnel, the last place you want the excess pressure going too is back into the inlet track.

Hope this helps

Cheers.

Why down the transmission tunnel? For emissions?

Would there be any downsides to just fitting a small filter to the catch tank outlet and just have them sat in the engine bay?

Yep i had mine venting under the bonnet and often got a wiff of oil fumes in the cabin. A metre of pipe down the tunnel and no more nasty smells

Yeah API advocate the trans. tunnel route. Or get the sump modded with a return port, so it goes back to the sump (as API did to mine - a 'lossless' system).

Also, another main reason why the oil vapour venting mod is done, is so that you do away with having to mix it with the intake air in the first place - as oil vapour has the effect of lowering the octane rating. So routing back to the intake would, unwantingly, bring you back to that undesirable situation.

That's why I'm running a catch can in the first place - to keep oil out of the intake system and keep it running 'cleaner'.

I'll be blanking off the breather notches on the inlet pipe next. Any idea what to use?

Suitable sized screws (slightly oversized) are excellent - neat and simple.

Or simply lengths of appropriate dia. silicone hose held secure on the ports by tie-wraps. And then a bolt held in the other end of the silicone by tie-wrap too.
