Cam belt change
Have been asked a few times recently how I fit a new cam belt and how to lock the Left Hand cam pulleys as they are ‘on the lobe’ and can turn before the belt is fitted.
This is how I personally replace the cam belt with only the Left Hand Inlet cam ‘on the lobe’. Engine is a STi Version 7 with AVCS but procedure is the same for all EJ20/257 Quad Cam Turbo engines.
1)Set the crank pulley Line (highlighted in yellow) to the timing mark on the oil pump - the pistons are now in the safe position midway in the bores. Do not use the Red triangle as this is the TDC mark.
2) Set the Right Hand pulleys (drivers side) to their respective marks.
3) Rotate the Left Hand exhaust pulley by hand anti-clockwise until the single line is in the 5 o’clock position and you can just feel the cam lobe touch the lifter bucket.
Rotate the Left Hand Inlet pulley clockwise with an alley key/spanner until the single line is in the 2 o’clock position – you will feel the cam opening the valves as you rotate it into position and it is now ‘on the lobe’.
4) Starting at the crank pulley and going in an anti-clockwise direction ,fit the timing belt, lining up the belt marks to the timing marks on the pulleys.
When the belt is fitted to the Left Hand pulleys, clip the belt to the pulleys with soft jaw clips/clamps to stop the belt from dropping off the pulleys.
6) Rotate the Left Hand Inlet and Exhaust pulleys together anti-clockwise until the pulley marks line up.

7) Fit the timing belt tensioner, remove the tensioner locking pin and the clips on the Left Hand pulleys.
8) Rotate the engine with a spanner clockwise one complete turn and double check the timing marks on the pulleys are lined up – ignore the belt marks as they have served their purpose of initial installation.
