boost problem ??
hi all , ive been a tad naughty ive had my 02wrx engine rebuilt by api and to be fair like anyone spending over 3k would do, ive run it in carefully and as instructed for 1,100 miles taking it to 4k revs tops . but today i had an open road and no cars around so as you do i put my foot down in third to 4th and noticed the boost was kind of "surging" high and low and was whooshing out the dump valve ?! now could this be that im running an induction kit ? as before i had engine failure it was mapped with the standard airbox . im sure its not the turbo as i bought it brand new " ihi vf34 "
anyway im a worry guts it goes to david at api this wednesday for mapping so do u think it just needs a nice tune up by the sound of things ?
cheers all
Dave

ok so let me get this straight.
You've had a 3k rebuild, a new vf34 turbo, run it in off boost for 1100 miles, and you're concerned that BEFORE YOU'VE HAD IT MAPPED you've got issues?
How you can run it in for all that time and not wait another 3 days before giving it the beans AFTER its mapped is beyond me.
Now I know why some engine builders dont offer a warranty. They must crap it when they hear things like this.

You must dread customers like this Dave, clearly more money than sense
The amount of people that blow up a rebuild before getting it mapped shocks me, I even read somewhere that 1 lad blew his up ON THE WAY to getting mapped as he was driving like a ****

I'm not sure if some actually know what "mapping" is and does. They think it just makes the car faster.
If they did know what is actually does they would be aware of the damage than WILL be caused by altering the cars components without mapping or giving it beans on a base map.

We've had that before, as I am sure you will expect and in many cases it has ended in tears.
We'll see on Wednesday when we map it .

Let's say he didn't post his stupidness up on this site and on mapping day the engine let go.
Where do you stand David ?
Is it down to you to repair ?
There must be lots of idiots who thrash their cars before final mapping and do damage, where do engine builders stand ?
Obviously it's the drivers/owners fault but can you prove it ?

it was only the one time and no red line or anything i wasnt thrashing it guys ! i just put my foot down enough to notice the boost and that was it . it drives perfect still with no smoke and perfect idle so hopefully hes fine im surely it takes more than one blip to 5000revs to ruin a new engine once its done 1000miles ??

not really what you said in your first post is it and i quote
"but today i had an open road and no cars around so as you do i put my foot down in third to 4th and noticed the boost was kind of "surging" high and low "
the fact you mention no other cars were about and you put your foot down suggests to me you did nail it and are now backtracking, end ot he day i hope no damage is done and i hope the mapping goes well but was risky stuff to do it!

i understand u saying that cos id think the same to be honest mate ! but i changed to 4th at 5k and took it easy from there . so to get it straight so i dont get accused of being a boy racer i came round a corner in third gear and there was no cars about so i put my foot down "not to floor " i heard the problem at about 4.5-5 thousand revs so changed to 4th ! i did intend to plant my foot yes , but heard the dump valve acting up and naturally thought better not !
