subaru driving question
hi.
i am a subaru owner of a wagon r plate turbo.
i have noticed that at certain speeds it feels like its holding back, feels as tho a brake caliper sticking on sometimes, or not quite right, or would i be thinking its more of a coil pack problem as these are prone to becoming faulty ,ticks over fine drives fine, just sometimes bit judderery or hesitant if thats the right word!
any advise would be helpful

It,s hard to say tbh, If your brake is binding you can tell by coming to halt on a slight incline and take your foot off the brake to see if it rolls. If a coil is gone it will sound rough and idle rough with a noticeable lack of power. When did you last have a full service and also check when spark plugs where changed.

My classic had similar issues,felt like holding back,lumpy power delivery sometimes found one of the plugs(no.4) was cracked an not on properly!! New plugs sorted her right out,completely different car

same with mine bud when i first picked her up... mine was that the gap in one of the plugs was bigger then the rest, thought id put new heat 7s just in case... run fine ever since

yes feels like hesitation, it idles lovely and drives nice ,but at pulling away steady or at a constant speed driving you notice it ,little holds back now and then, like mentioned feels like brake shoes sticking on a little! but obviously not! no smoke coming from the wheels! or not yet anyway!
i asked what thw maf sensor was but i see its linked with the airfilter side of things, it maybe this, am i right by what other people are saying if its a coil fault it would not idel nicely or the revs would die etc?

if i was you i would start wth the plugs as it dosnt cost you anything to take them out just bit of time and effort. if one of your plugs/ leads ect are at fault and missfiring now and then the plug in the probblem cylinder will be a different colour to the rest (blacker/darker)
Give that ago and if you find one thats different id put new plugs in while you have them out see if that works

yes thats prob a good place to start.
will check the plugs first, are they easy to change or get too as heard its a bit of a pig of a job! or mistaken, and any special tools or size spanners etc.
i am thinking, plugs, lead, or coil, strangely driving sometimes its ok, and other times like to day you notice it, going along at 60mph steady same speed and you feel it just like a little miss or a hestitation or slight jerkness i would call it supose apon dring steady speeds.

how easy is it to change the plugs please?
any special tools required or just a striaght forward job to do?
any particular plugs to ask for from a car parts supplier?
doing job at weekend to see and find this little hesitation issue~!

yea its a bit of a pain.. i used a spark plug socket, two exstension bars and a elbow joint but its not that bad wen you get all the bits n bobs out the way.. ive heard that NGK 7 laser platinums are the best but dont forget to gap them, not sure about leads as mines got coil packs for each plug (which can be one of the problems for missing).. just one last thing.. if it dose it more when it rains have you got the vents open in you bonnet coz mine runs like a pig if water gets in..

The uk car runs fine on 95ron. It's the JDM car that requires the higher octane fuel.
I would look somewhere else for the fault.
If you are going to the bother of removing the plugs then would replace them anyway. They last 60,000 miles and would probably not need doing again in your ownership, and eliminated as the cause of a problem.
If that don't do it then borrow a coilpack and leads, see if that cures it.
After that then the MAF, see if you can borrow one again.
There are many reasons the car may hesitate under constant load. In particular fuel pressure (pump). Oil contamination (rings/valve stem seals) So would suggest that if the above simpler checks don't cure it then a visit to a specialist would be in order.
Doubt it's binding brakes as this is a constant drag, not intermittant. And usually shows up as brake judder under braking due to overheating of the discs/pads.

Does sound like a coilpack. One of my Fiestas did a similar thing a few years back. Fine from cold start, ok on acceleration but stutters at constant speed light throttle. Getting worse with time as the engine got hotter.

yes changed the leads and plugs, no obvious issues with plugs all looked the same colour and not worn down etc, i have cleaned the maf with spray, so i think the only alternative now is a coilpack, try this and see if this works, but strangely the car idles fine, revs not jumping up and down, drives fine, it feels when driving down motorway now and then its holding back a second or so, or as tho you are getting low on fuel! if thats any help, give it more gas and it appears to go away, all i have left now is either coilpack/maf unit or fuelpump?
any ideas now as someone lese mentioned the lamda sensor?
its a r reg, wanted to plug in a diagnostic code reader using obd but i could not find the socket for this under the steering colum, does this model use wire connections instead of a socket?
