Take apart an alternator
I want to clean and powdercoat a lot of parts under my hood (everything black and the intake red), but I can't take the alternator apart without demolishing it.
I tried it on my original alternator, but it's broken now. The alternator pulley was a pain in the ***, but the inner parts are a puzzle to me...
I've got a new alternator now, but don't want to destroy that one to
Can somebody tell me what I need to do to get the two parts of the housing so it can be sandblasted and coated. Thanks!

Its quite a job to strip one down to get the casings powdercoated - you have to de-solder the rectifier connections to remove the stator coil and the same for the IC regulator pack which can easily damage the components if you use too much heat.
You also need to heat up the rear housing to remove it from the bearing.
Do you really want to risk another broken alternator ??

Hmmm... no.. I'd rather leave the alternator the way it is, but when I powdercoat everything else (cooling liquid reservoir, steeringpump, intake manifold and all brackets), it looks retarded when only the alternator is that crappy corroded aluminum.
Is there an alternative way to make this thing black without taking it apart? I've been thinking about spraypainting it, but it will be a hell of a job to mask up this thing so no paint will get inside...

Had mine polished, agree with above that no soldering or de-soldering was needed. Hardest part is getting the pulley off.

But when I want to sandblast the housing, I do need to take out all inner parts because the sand gets everywhere.
Easiest solution I can think of is: take off the pulley, clean the alternator and let it dry, open the housing (4 long bolts on the sides), tape up the inner parts, spraypaint the housing in multiple thin layers and clearcoat, put everything back together.
I also thought of a solution for the brushes: put a long piece of tape over them, fold the tape double for strength, put eveything together and pull the tape from between the brushes and the axle.

There is no way you could do as you have described sorry.
The alternator will come apart but as has been said the pulley is a pain, the only way I could undo the nut was using an impact gun, once that's off and as you say the 4 long bolts are out it should come apart with some careful persuading. To reinstall the brushes there is a small hole that a thin object like a nail will push into holding the brushes in once re assembled pull the nail out and the springs will push the brushes onto the armature.

The one i stripped was a classic too so should be very similar.
Have you got the pulley off?
I'd start there and the slowly and carefully start easing it apart, but as i said previously it will be very stubborn or at least mine was.
