Default From the US with a JDM clip looking for advice!

Hey guys, my name is Garrett I'm from the US, Michigan to be exact and i bought this V4 STi FULL clip to put into my n/a GM chassis, called the 2.5 RS here.

Really just looking for some input here as everyone on the US forums (i am a regular on RS25) seems to tell me that the EJ20k engine will not run on 93 octane fuel that we get here in the states. Was reading up on other forums (some UK forums, etc) and it seems that some people are saying the same things.

I did a search here about the EJ20ks and didn't find much info about whether or not it was safe to run on the STOCK ECU with NO MODS aside from an exhaust. Bolded those because everyone on the US forums seems to understand someone wanting run a stock motor :P

Anyways, what have you guys heard about the EJ20ks and running it on the stock ECU? I'm sure there are a lot more of these motors floating around in the UK than there is in the US with a lot more people speaking from experience.

Also the way to go to tune the motor (either for increased performance or just fuel compatibility) is the APEXi Power FC. Anyone have experience with one?

OH, and of course... everyone enjoys pictures!

Thanks for reading, haha!

Can't wait to poke around here more! Seems like a ton of information is out there.

It'll not like that fuel one bit!
The lowest stuff we have here is 95, and it doesn't like that either.
Just about happy with 97, but usually people get them remapped to run on 97

93 ron is the highest you can get?? Are you sure there are no higher octane pumps within the better 'Gas stations'?

over here 95 ron is the norm, and there are some pumps in all stations that sell premium unleaded which is 97 ron. You can get the cars mapped for 95 / 97, but some folk prefer to add a bottle of octane booster as they fill up.

Then we have some outlets that sell fuel for performance cars (99 ron) which are not as common to find and that costs more, but a lot of people on here choose to use that.

Is the fuel 93 AKI? If so thats about the same as our 97 RON. I have a V3 STi with an EJ20K and I wouldn't put 97 RON in it on the stock ecu!!

The way the US fuel works isn't by using RON, when i say 93 Octane i don't mean 93RON.

I tried to do some reading up on this and found this to be interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

I think the way the US does it, is the by the MON (Motor Octane Number) so 93 Here is about 98RON.

Check out the link for gobs more info.

I can get 110 Octane (MON) out of the pump at a station that i am pretty sure i want to mix in with the 93 (because 110 is pretty expensive) and be able to run that with the stock ECU.

Also a PFC is the other option... i just can't seem to source one for a 20k.

http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/R...RONMONPON.html This guy suggests you lot actually go by PON and not MON. Interesting...

PFC's for a 20k come up for sale here fairly regularly. I bought one and had it mapped for 99 RON.

Hmm.. very interesting.

Also that page said something about octane boosters. In the states they are known to be pretty much a load of ****, meaning they really don't do much for the gas (petrol) in your car. Any of you guys used these in the UK, or are they even for sale there?

I guess i'll have to keep lurking. I could probably tune (or it seems as you guys like to call it map) it myself to run on US gas. I wouldn't mind the drop in power it would most likely bring.

Shipping across the pond may be a bit of a pain though, haha.

I've also heard people running the WRX 20k ECU in the states and said it's been safe. Any truth in that?

I appreciate all the quick responses guys! Thanks so much!

As I understand it octane booster is used to substitute for lower octane fuel, to avoid detonation, it's not a wonder drug, and not going to be like adding a performance boost like NOS lol

I don't use it, because like your RS, my car is naturally aspirated currently.

The best thing to do would be to get to mapped for whatever fuel you want to run. As the V4 ECU can't be mapped you'll need the Apexi or the ESL http://www.enduringsolutions.com/ (much cheaper).

Also are you sure that is an STI engine? Do you have the full engine number?

Good luck with the fit

Yep, it is the STi engine.. here is the VIN plate:

Also that ESL looks very interesting. Does it just solder in to the stock ECU? How do you go about tuning/mapping it? Tactrix cable + computer?

Much cheaper than the PFC, but i don't have a problem paying for one if it's the easier solution.

i think the apexi is probably your best bet because there will be someone in the us who can map it, the esl board for v3/4 is new over here so i think you will struggle to get a tuner who knows anything about it

It's an STi motor. Red flakes, yes.

75 ECU as well.

Hmm.. noted. I figured i'd be doing the mapping myself, but i guess having the option of have someone else to do it is REALLY nice to have as a plan b.
