Default Quick question.....

Just wanted to know if all the oil separator covers at the back of the bell housing are made out of plastic & are they prone to leak?

I was told newage ones are made out of Aluminium & classics made out of plastic?

Cheers

My classic has an aluminium plate, I think originally they were plastic but were prone to leaking and were superseded to aluminium

At a certain point the Aluminium ones were stopped & replaced with plastic ones according to Importcarparts?

Surely someone must know. Will have to do more digging. Are they common with leaking?

Yes Kas they are prone to leaking and mainly down to being either over tightened and cracking or going hard from years of engine heat cycles

It is best to use 3 bond and lock tight on the threads of the screws that hold it on and only nip them up and allow enough time for the lock tight to go off before use so they can't shake loose.

Cheers Ryan, when they leak where would the oil run down to? Sump? Would it be a heavy leak or minor?

It would inside the bellhousing and also coming down the sump which may appear at first like you have a sump leak.
It would be exactly the same as a rear crank seal leak.

I recently stripped my 2002 sti engine and the separator plate is alloy not plastic, not sure how that fares with your engine mind.

Unhappy

Thanks for the help guys.

The plastic ones are have a tendency to leak which the classics have I am guessing.

Jay if your one was metal then it makes sense that mine would be metal, i think i can rule that out now.

Its either the sump or rear crank seal. If the rear crank seal was leaking would the clutch get contaminated and slip?

Its only a few drips coming from behind the sump when driven on boost.

I think answering to this thread has jinxed me . Was checking over the car ready for JGM to carry out a running in map on my build and i see droplets of oil on the subframe below the steering rack.
So i'll have to keep an eye on it and most probably gearbox out and have a look

Basket!

Sorry to hear. Degreased everything underneath today and left the car running, no oil. Only defect i found was a dodgy turbo oil drain pipe. Replaced that and now i just need to re-check it.

Cheers all for the help.
